Show letters to the editor - So - Editor: After Kent Shearers explanation of how the five persons proposed for federal judge were select- ed, I am really confused. I fail to see how the fact that Parker Nielson has defended Judge Ritter is relevant to the question or any answer to Nielsons claim that the persons proposed are not qualified. In fact, if what Shearer says is true, it only supports what Nielson said. Shearer must know what the facts are, because he claims his wife was on the commission. If Judge Ritters friends were to be disqualified, the commission should have said so. Judge Ritter was a gifted intellectual. Does that mean that intellectuals were also eliminated as candidates by this commission? That seems to be what Nielson was saying. Besides, how could the fact that a person was a friend of Judge Ritter, or had good things to say about him, be any indication that he would be the same kind of judge that he was. Judge Ritters friends probably included a lot of very good people, and probably some who were not so good. I think judges should be chosen for their own abilities and not according to who their friends are. Lawrence A. Ried " " " I I I I I I I - whats the deal? Set the record straight I - I I I - Editor: The story about Centralwest Ranches Enter- in-prise , May 22) contained some inacurrately stated I formation which we would like to call to your attention. For the record, we would like to say we are not sure what the memberships will be selling for in the future, as there are many facets which affect membership sales. Furthermore, we would like to clarify that Ira and Fred Gagon are major stockholders in Centralwest Corporation and not in its subsidiaries. Pornography story biased Editor: The article in the May 29 Enterprise regarding Salt Lakes police and the bookstores was very interesting. But, it was also very biased. The police are charged with the responsibility of enforcing the laws of the city and state. They really have no choice about which laws they should enforce. It is patently unfair for someone to accuse them of harassment when all theyre doing is carrying out their responsibilities. Also, the article did nothing to represent the views of those who think pornography is harmful to society. It is accepted among many psychologists and social thinkers that lewd and explicit pictures can be extremely harmful to young and impressionable minds. It has also been shown that more mature minds can be twisted by such literature with the result of producing unsocial behavior. I agree that Salt Lake is nowhere near what Los Angeles was ten years ago. However, that does not make the police or the laws necessarily bad. Salt Lake is one of the cleanest cities in the country, and I know because Ive been to most others. It is the intention of the laws and ordinances to keep Salt Lake from becoming like these other cities. I admit there is a problem with censorship, and Im somewhat hesitant to go off and censor anything objectionable to the majoritys tastes. But porno represents a verv real danger to the social body. This article was obviously in favor of the bookstores. Perhaps that comes from your papers orientation to business news. But there are many businessmen who are not in favor of full license. Freedom is what made this country strong. But with freedom comes responsibility. Therefore, no one has a basic inalienable right to endanger society by selling literature and showing movies which pollute the mind with inhuman and degrading concepts. That is exactly what porno does. Martin L. Murphy |
