Show Page Two - The Pyramid - December 22, 1999 Merrill Ogden tough for Santa fulfilling the Christmas 99 I believe most of us have some fond memories of Christmases past. I know my remembrances of Christmas as a child bring back magical feelings. A white Christmas was part of the magic of the season. True or not, I have convinced myself that it almost always snowed on Christmas Eve when I was a kid. It seems like it snowed more and laid down deeper back in the olden days of the 1950s. (Of course, on a six-o- r seven-year-oit doesnt take much snow to get "knee ld deep.") We used have to our church Christmas program on Eve. That was Christmas standard. To have such a thing earlier in the month would have seemed strange and out of place. Seeing Santa on the night before Christmas was great except for the parents who heard their children make last minute changes in their Christmas wishes. After going upstairs to bed on the night before Christmas, my older brothers and sister helped me hear the sound of reindeer hooves on the rooftop. It was great, and a little scary, knowing so many animals and a big sleigh were just up through the ceiling above me. (Not to mention the vision of Santa sneaking around.) I was a true believer in Santa and I still am. At our house, if you dont believe in Santa Claus, he doesnt come. So it definitely pays to believe. I have loved Santa over the years. He has done a tremendous amount of good for me. As I grew older, I eventually realized what a big job it was for, Santa to grant Christmas wishes. , , Santas role 'with small children is really quite simple. Younger eager believers are easier satisfied than older skeptics who arent yet enjoying what weve come to call "the true meaning of Christ- mas." As a teenager in the 60s, I put Santa and his helpers in a real tight spot. I begged for a Vox Continental Organ and an amplifier so I could be in a rockn roll band and become famous. Somehow, Santa made it happen. Well, not the famous part, but he did produce the musical instrument and equipment. Later on, I wondered how he did it. It must have been request which I learned later was the cost equivalent of a couple of months pay for my Dad. There were many needs which my family had at the time. Santa could have made other choices than to grant my youthful desire to play "Louie, Louie" at high school dances. But, Santa and his helpers knew how to make magical memories of Christmas. Receiving a major item at Christmas was not and is not a requirement of a memorable Christmas. The important thing is the time spent together playing, eating, singing, remembering the nativity story of Jesus, and reminiscing about Christmases past. These things create fresh memories. But there are times when Santa pulls off the right gift at the right time that creates a terrific memory. My thoughts go to an annual silver dollar in the toe of my stocking, a blue Tonka cattle truck, cap guns and belt, a Daisy BB gun rife, a red Schwinn bike, and of course, the Vox organ. Some say Christmas is for kids. Thats true. But its also for Santa and his helpers. The joy of creating Christmas memories for children and others is a delight. Sanpeters, with their good hearts, help make Christmas a happy time for many who are in need of Santa. These Santa helpers look around and notice the needs of others. In the spirit of Christian giving, they share time, money, and gifts which create magic and memorable Christmases for the forgotten, the lonely and the less blessed with this worlds goods. Much good is done and can be done independently or through ..the ta programs, Angel Trees, and the like. As you read this, there is still time to extend Christlike kindnesses to your friends, neighbors and yes, even complete strangers. Remember the Christ child and what he represents. (Do unto others as you would be done by.) Also, remember Santa for the good that he represents. (Tis better to give than to receive.) May your Christmas Holiday be one to remember. Gift giving and receiving aside, spending time with family and friends will assure us of good memories if our attitudes are of love. Merry- Christmas!... Merrill.
