I've developed a guilty conscience about shopping outside the county. hand over the Ever time check, or more likely the credit card, to the clerk cringe a little, knowing that those sales tax revenues are going to make improvements in Utah County and not in 1 1 1 1 Sanpete. Evidently there are plenty of us Sanpeters for whom a guilty conscience is not a sufficient obstacle to keep us at home for all our shopping. I saw a bunch of you Saturday strolling around TJ Maxx. Old Navy. Home Base, Media Play and oh yes, dare I say it, t. were Sanpeters promenading through University Mall and Town Center Mall. Wal-Mar- We were "loading it up" at Sam's Club. Sanpeters aren't the only ones looking for selection and variety though. I saw folks from Sevier and Emery counties. This is not new news to most readers. So where is this going. what's the point, is there an issue here? If you're a Sanpete retailer, there is an important issue. People in Sanpete with "stuff to sell" would like Sanpeters to buy the stuff they need right here at home. Some folks know are good at doing most of their shopping in Sanpete. They have tailored their lifestyles and households to use what is readily available in the county. When they need something outside the normal inventory, they are prepared to order items through the local 1 merchants. These experienced and ultra-loySanpete shoppers are patient as they wait a few days for their orders to arrive. They are like the residents in River City in the musical "The Mu- sic Man." These folks love the anticipation of the arrival of "the Wells Fargo wagon." It's an event. These shoppers have learned not to be too disappointed if the ordered item WATER WATER Household well permit water rights available in Northern Sanpete to Fairview or Ephraim to Fountain Green. Call local, Arley 4 or Cliff County-Ephrai- m 436-837- on the "wagon" the first time. They just make do until the item hopefully arrives the next time. Think what might happen if more of us took this approach. Really, this is what we all should do. A chain reaction could start which would amaze us. Our businesses would sell more Merchandisers merchandise. would prosper, merchandisers would faint. With prosperity, businesses would expand and carry more variety. Prices could reflect the increased volume of business. Before you say "industrial revenue bond" we would be munching Mrs. Field's cookies and greeting each other in the atrium courtyard of the new "Shoppers of the Sanpitch Mall." OK. that was a nice flight of fantasy, but let's get back to the planet earth. That flat reality is that many of us are not going to do 100 percent of our shopping locally, even if and when arrives. The shopping centers and malls on the Wasatch Front are glitzy temples of merchandising that are magnetic to those of us who constantly think we need more stuff. "How You Gonna Keep 'Em Down on the Farm After They've Seen Paree?" title and refrain of song, 1919, Joe Young. Some, interestingly enough, dont leave Sanpete, but still shop out of the countWal-Ma- rt y- They'll mail order their hunting boots from Cabelas and their underwear from Fredericks of Hollywood, you never know what people might be w'earing under those camouflage coveralls. Mail order is a time honored rural America tradition which has its place in Sanpete. The point of this piece is this. I believe that each of us need to experiment with increasing our trade in the Sanpete marketplace. My experience is that it feels good to write a check to a Sanpete business. It's a "family feeling." We're helping each other, and that philosophy counts for something beyond dollars and cents and sense. is And the happy that some of those taxes paid stay in the county. If the service line needs to cross someone elses property, j Tholen will need to provide Spring City with an easement. Tholen will need to purchase a non refundable zoning application for $50 from Spring City. After this the associated costs fan be figured. Once this is approved and signed, Tholen can get started with the county on their requirements. Devon Beck stated he believes there is no right of way to this property because he is the land owner of the property in front of Tholens. Tholen stated that according to the county there is a right of way. Mayor Allred said this issue would need to be resolved by Tholen then the city would run the power line to his property once Tholen presented them with an easement through Beck's Committee. Councilperson Cynthia Allred has spoke to Dennis Madsen, son of Helen Madsen McKinney, who would be willing to serve on this committee. Madsen does have an interest to serve and would be willing to stay the full five years. Some members of the council do not know Madsen and would like to meet him before deciding, which was placed on the January agening : da. Planning and zoning have previously submitted a subdivision ordinance for review and possible adoption by the council. A moratorium on lot splits was placed and is now up, until the ordinance can be adopted by the council. A brief overview of the ordinance was discussed. Pleasant Miscellaneous There is a home on Mt Street that is being worked on. The owner has moved in a camper trailer which looks like they could be living in it. This is allowed during construction. The water has been hooked up to the house and the sewer is stubbed in but has not yet been hooked to the house. A notarized letter needs to be sent to the owner giving him 10 days to install the sewer and have it inspected or the city will disconnect all services. Approval was given to Leslie Larson, who would like to start a home business of ceramics, custom tile and later on, pottery. She does have a letter from neighbors and her application is in order. The council talked to her about parking and if there are problems she will be required to provide off road parking to which she agreed. The kiln will be inside and she is in the process of upgrading her electrical system. Tom Tholen requested Spring City to provide power to his lot? above Goldings on Crawford Lane.
