Show Page Two - The Pyramid - April 16, 1997 Whats Cool in School MMENTARY Merrill Ogden & Calvin Hobbes Public notices & Sanpetes future dare say that the public notice section of The Pyramid is probably the most boring and most ignored of any pan of the newspaper. More boring than the classifieds. And more ignored, perhaps, than the "Inside Sanpete" column. Obituanes arent to be ignored in a small town paper. First of all we like to confirm that we ourselves havent died. Second were concerned that someone might die who owes us money. In that case, w'e might be called upon to be a pallbearer. (You know the punchline: "Youve carried him for so long you may as well finish the job.") Have you ever tried not to read the booking report in the paper? You see the heading "Booking Report" and then cast your eyes elsewhere saying to yourself, "I am not petty enough to be interested m who was arrested in Sanpete this week." (Yeah, Right) Morbid curiosity always holds four aces and wins the hand. Some things in the paper are hard to ignore, like Paul Hamiltons dazzling smile in his real estate ad. (Funny I should mention Paul m the same context as death notices and booking reports. No offense Paul, thats just how the "stream of consciousness" method of writing goes sometimes.) Let me get back to my original premise. This will bring me to the point of this piece. (Yes, there will be a point, believe it or not.) The public notices in the paper are generally boring and ignored. Public notices are sometimes called legal notices. Legal notices because they fulfill a legal requirement in the procedural workings of property foreclosures, bond elections, governmental meetings, etc. Etc. Depending on where a reader lives often is a factor in how much interest a public notice will have for that perI son. Heres the point. In last weeks edition of The Pyramid, public notice was given for something that should not be ignored or considered boring. It concerns the citizenry of the entire county. The Sanpete County Commission will hold a Public Hearing on April 22, 1997, at 1:00 p.m. The purpose is to receive comments on the proposed Sanpete County General Plan. The proposed plan is available for review in each city hall in Sanpete and at Sanpata' Landing Nawspnpar THE PyRRUlID (USPS 365-58- 0) Published Weekly at Pleasant Mt. 49 West Main Street FAX: 462-213- 462-245- 4 Dear Editor: the brightest comet over 400 ears, last visited the center of our solar system just Hale-Bop- Robert Justesen, son of Gerald and Meredith Justesen, Chester, has recently returned from the Canada Winnepeg LDS He will speak 10:50 a.m., Sunday, April 27, in the Sanpitch LDS Ward in Wales. We had a beautiful lunar eclipse. March 23, with Mars being next to the moon and all three of these rather unusual solar system activities in conjunction with the vernal equinox, which coincides with important religious celebrations for both Christian and Jew. The Easter season points our thoughts to the glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ, the freeing of the Hebrew nation by Queen Esther and Passover. If you ask the question, when will all of these activities, a comet of this magnitude, a lunar eclipse next to Mars and the vernal equinox, line up again, the 0 probability is once in about orbits of our solar system around the center of our galaxy. It takes us 230 million years to go around our galaxy one time, and we have only made about 50 orbits since our galaxy was created some 12 billion years ago. Indeed, we have witnessed a very rare event, signs m the heavens. Hale-Bopall by itself, is quite spectacular. With an orbit period of 4,200 years, it is very active. That is. the solar wind is carrying off a large amount of particles giving it a tail longer than the distance from here to the sun; the tail is over 100 million miles long. The last comet brighter than Hale-Bop- p was observed in 1577 by the famous astronomer, Tycho Brahe. Solar s stem distances are measured in terms of the distance from the earth to the sun, 93 million miles, which is called one astronomical unit (1 AU). It takes light 8.3 minutes to travel 1 AU. Hale-Bop- p got closest to the earth on March 22, almost exactly the same time as Preston R.T. Seely, son of the lunar eclipse, when it was Stewart and Carolyn Seely, of about 1.3 AU away.
