NOTICE OF REQUEST FOR PUBLIC COMMENT The Sanpete Ranger Sal District, Manti-L- a National Forest proposes to use prescribed fire to improve the ecosystem 0 by burning acres of mixed communities. The burns would be done in Canyon, Black Mountain, and Loveridge Flat, areas east of Sterling, Sanpete County, Utah during late summer andor fall of Six-Mi- 1997. Prescribed fire wiU be used as the management tool to reduce the conifer communities that dominate the area. White fir, which is an undesirable commercial timber species, is the dominant tree. The anticipated benefits to treating the area with fire are: increased forage production for big game wildlife and domestic livestock, reduced fuel loading which will decrease the potential for a destructive wildfire, increased water yields, and an improved ecological state consisting of regenerated aspen stands which are more productive and desired communities. Prescribed fire is a natural and economical treatment to accomplish these objectives. Comments are requested by April 20, 1997.
