Thats because Kanabs accomplished mayor in 1912 saw to it that stray dogs were controlled, a dike was built, and bridges were constructed over the town's canals That mayor was Mary W. The accomplishments of Mayor Howard and women like her are being commemorated this w eek. March which is designated by Congress as "Women's History Week" under a resolution I sponsored aimed at spurring awareness of the contributions women have made in the building of America History traditionally has been a study of the great men of the world, as such, it has ignored a large part of our heritage by overlooking the great women who have also shaped our past As long as were studying history, we might just as well learn all of it. But, is it bad to be a "foreigner? Many of the new people have brought with them new ideas, are holding leadership positions in civic and church organizations and are making vital contributions to the towns they live in. Is that bad? Looking back just five or ten years ago, there was no growth, the schools were threatened with consolidation or closing and there was no challenge. Sanpete needed a new transfusion to keep it living. But then perhaps some prefer no challenge. Dont confuse us with new ideas or facts they say. Also we often hear this question, "Why do people move here because it is a nice, little town and then try to change it? Another thought expressed and often assumed is that all newcomers are gbing to bring corruption with them. Now how do Sanpeters define corruption? Is it dishonesty, vandalism or a multitude of other criminal acts, or is it as some are defining - different lifestyles? Also what is meant by the often quoted statement, preserving the rural atmosphere? Does preserving the rural atmosphere mean clinging to the old barns and sheds that are tumbling down around us, vacant city blocks filled with weeds and debris, animals in backyards or just what? One of the great things about living in America is that all of us are free to live where we choose and adopt our own lifestyles as long as we dont infringe on the rights of others. That includes living quietly to ourselves or being involved and progressive. We are all Americans-- - lets all be Sanpeters, home-grow- Th Pyramid March 4 mid March 11, 1912. or- . |
