Show Services Held Monday For Fairview Pioneer Funeral services were held frjm che Fairview South ward chape. Monday at 2 p. -, m. for - Samuel Bills, aged resident of that city, who died Friday from ailments incident in-cident to old age. Samuel Bills, son of John and Elizabeth Scott Bills was born March 22, .1848 at Council B'.uffs, Iowa. His parents joined the L. D. S church in 1849 and came to Utah the same year settling about ten miles south of Salt Lake City. The father died ' February 19, 1850 while en route to California. Three years later the mother remarried and moved to California and died there. Samuel was cared for by the David H. Jones family and came with them in 1858 to Utah, locating locat-ing at Fillmore and later moving to Mt. Pleasant. In 1860 they moved to Fail-view; in 1863 they went to St. George and returned to 'Fairview in 1865. In the spring of 1866 Mr. Bills was called to go as a teamster to the Missouri river ror immigrants, I leaving Salt Lake City, May 1st, in Captain Abner Lowry's company. comp-any. Cholera among the people causae! caus-ae! a prolonged delay and the journey jour-ney west did not begin until Aug ust 13. They reached Salt Lake October 22 of that year. In 18G7 Mr. Bills was called into the Minute Company to serve in the Black Hawk war, where he was retained until 1872, the year that war was endeu. He went to the Southern States to perform a mission for the church in 1880, laboring in the State of Georgia. He was active in religious and civic affairs of . this city, serving as Mayor for three years, city councilman coun-cilman for five years, school trustee, trus-tee, and member of the Bishopric 23 years. He married Ophelia Ann Howell of Fairview, September 12, 1867, Bishop Amasa Tucker performing the ceremony. His widow and ten children, aiso seventy-three grandchildren and fifty-two great grandchildren and one half brother. Wesley Bills of Mt. Pleasant, survive. The children John E. Bills, Vernal; Ver-nal; Mrs. Celestia Tucker, Wapello, Idaho; Mrs. Ellen Fowles, Mrs. Effle Mower, Chas O. and James : Scott Bills, all of Salt Lake; Jor- j dan E. Bills, Mrs. Sarah E. Peterson, Peter-son, S. D. Bills and Mrs. Ann Garlic Gar-lic all of Fairview. j Funeral services were held Monday Mon-day in the North ward chapel with Bishop Peter Neilson presiding. Prayers were by James Anderson and A. R. Anderson. Music was by the combined ward choirs with ; a special solo by Bishop H. P. Han- j sen. The speakers were George j F. Olsen, E. H. Anderson, Peter Fetcrson. Bishop J. R. Graham and Bishop Nielson. Interment j was in the Fairview cemetery where I John I.-. Bench dedicated the grave. Flowers were beautiful and in great profusion. Many relatives and friends attended the funeral. |
