Show ECHO DAM WORK progresses NICELY IN SPITE OF WEATHER work on the construction of tile the echo dam during the month of january 1930 was confined largely to the placing of rock in the rock fiall section of the dam the weather being unfavorable for the placing of any material in the earth fill I 1 section rock hauling was carried on continuously during 7 the month from two rock quarries trucks and tractors hauled rocks and during the month an approximate yardage of cubic yards was removed from these pits the larger rocks being placed on the upstream face of the dam in a four foot layer of while the finer material has been placed on the back or downstream side of the dam dain as a rock blanket excavation of the scoped cutoff cut off wall under the spillway structure was continued throughout the month and at the end ot of the month had been completed into the left abutment of the dam tor for a considerable sid erable distance this which is carried along on the bedrock of the dam fondation foundation foL dation and into this bedrock extends up into the overlying material above for a distance of 12 feet this excavation will be filled with concrete and will act as a wall to cut off any seepage that might occur when the reservoir is being bein used no concrete work was accomplished during the month but it Is expected that concrete will be placed in the excavation during february and that rock work will also be continued throughout february f A guthrie co inc contractors on them the dam employed during january an average dally daily force of 51 91 men and four head of ef creasing easing the number employed on the first of the month of men to on the last of the monthly pe period the contractor on the weber provo diversion canal expects to begin building camp and moving equipment onto this work about march no work haeng been accomplished complis hed to this end at this time clearing operations in the echo reservoir area were carried on during the month by the forces of the heiselt construction company using an average daily force of 18 16 men a caterpillar tractor dozen machines and four head of stock piling of brush and logs was carried on and some burning was attempted weather conditions during the month were unfavorable tor for any work other than the rock work a minimum temperature of 32 degrees below zero being encountered on january 21 snow fell on six days daya during the month a total fall of about one foot being recorded |
