| Show tad 40 adventurers CLUB HEADLINES FROM THE LIVES OF PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF 1 murderous bully by FLOYD GIBBONS famous headline H HELLO ELIO EVERYBODY here we are boys and girls another one of those real thrills that come right out of the most ordinary places this time an elevated train yes sir I 1 mean a real thrill a battle of brain against brawn but a battle for life just the same weve got to thank melville B young of brooklyn for this adventure hes es the david who sent that goliath to the cleaners without even the aid of a slingshot its one of those adventures that might happen to anybody so lets have mel dish up all the facts well sir mel says he had a girl out in coney island one summer and it used to be pretty late when he took her home and then got back to brooklyn where he lived why he hoarded boarded a park row elevated train at the surf avenue station one sunday morning about one thirty battling a gang of roughs boughs mel sat down in a corner seat and got all ready to have a nap on the way home when his big adventure began to happen just as mel got settled a hilarious party of seven or eight men and two women poured into the car there were no seats so that gang stood right before mel and started cutting up wham the first thing they did was to break the glass out of the door the guard found immediate business in a rear car and the gang of roughs boughs roared mel knew there was going to be big doings from then on sure enough there was one big two hundred plopped down on mels seat and doggoned near broke mels right leg mel weighed only about one hundred and twenty pounds but he was mad ile he drew up his knees gave one big shove and landed that big bully smack on the floor then things did happen mel alel was to be tossed off the platform that big bruiser took a sock at mel and announced that he was going to do a swell murdering job if mel get off at the next stop that got mels irish ancestry all stirred up but he knew he f v 0 kv ii r mel landed the big bully smack on the floor lick that whole crowd anyway mel decided to stick to his seat and pretended to go to sleep and that help the big fellow thought he was being treated with contempt and got madder than ever he wanted to toss mel right through the window but his friends made him promise to wait until the kid got off aff then fix him they said well the big bird kept raving and mel kept on playing possum but he miss misi the big boys loudly announced plan that plan was to wait until the train got out of the brighton cut and hit the elevated line and then at the first station chuck mel off the high platform the rest of the party agreed that it would be just grand those boys and gals had a good laugh over what was going to happen to mel they even figured out that the franklin avenue station platform was the highest and where the dirty work was going to be the bully became uglier as the train sped onto the elevated tracks there was no doubt now that the big man had worked himself into a i frenzy for actual murder mel felt it and the other passengers cowered in their seats breathlessly awaiting the tragedy something had to be done mel jumped up and confronted the trembling guard he demanded that the guard take charge of the train and protect the passengers mel says he got all mixed up in his metaphors but he made a burning speech addressed to the cowering passengers and the scared guard and more pointedly to his threatened executioner emergency cord and cops the train was speeding on it was an express and the next regular stop would be franklin avenue that high platform where the bully of the car had threatened to dash mel to his death mel looked up in desperation dangling idly over his head was a cord the emergency cord that mel had never considered in his hundreds of elevated rides it might help now mel thought because boys and girls ho he was in a an emergency if there ever was one the drunken giant was raving and chortling over his avowed assassination of that kid mel grabbed that emergency cord the big bully seized him by the throat mel hung on like grim deam the brakes screamed the train shuddered under the impact and skidded to a halt at a station platform there was pandemonium inside that car passengers howling and that giant bully roaring with rage as he tried to throttle mel and drag wm him out tor for that fatal dash to the street beelow mel squirmed out of the howling mass and plunged through the slowly opening door well sir by golly there stool two husky cops on that platform all ready for a fray barn bam barn mel could almost see those cops ash sticks bending over the skull of that infuriated giant who was scrambling after him mel gasped out his story to the big cops and watched them draw his assailant away all ticketed for a chaice of assault with intent to kin kill and oh yes mel went back to see that coney island gal the next night same as ever copyright service |
