THE MAH In your letter to the Editor of Millard County Chronicle Progress published 3 1987 you wrote the September following: “If Utah’s depressed state economic concerns do not thoroughly consider nursing’s current and recyclic plight of a shortage of working nurses at all levels rural hospitals which were a part of Channel 4’s study who are pending closure: Moab Tooele Blanding Milford and Delta plus others on the brink will close in the coming year” While I laud your efforts to generate grass root support for the continuation of necessary nursing training programs I must take strong exception to your inaccurate and potentially damaging reference to Channel 4’s broadcast In the first place Channel 4’s program was just program Certainly two days of interviews do not qualify as a ’’study” especially in the academic sense of the word- -a point which was made to me personally by the reporter during his visit to our facility Secondly I repeatedly made the point during my interview that the Delta Hospital was NOT at the brink of failing While others interviewed may have made reference to closure as an unfortunate potential outcome of current circumstances none of them to my knowledge were as definitive about the eventuality of that happening as you chose to be in your letter The Delta Hospital is challenged Reader appreciates newspaper Dear Delta Friends Enclosed Call by Postmaster Tom Hamilton il Res v with current economic and operational realities as are most all rural facilities However we are not in danger of closig our doors and certainly not in 1988 Current efforts to serve the public’s needs by strengthening existing pronew programs and by introducing grams as necessary together with continued affiliations with such support Intermountain Health Care as groups and the Utah Hospital Association should serve to keep what you suggest as inevitability from happening in such over The real danger generalizations is that they can create an impression in the minds of the the residents of those communities upon which the hospitals are most dependent for support-th- at the institution has passed the point of no return And once that impression is formed it is very difficult if not impossible to reverse The result is further erosion of the very local support which constitutes the life blood of the hospital’s operation We need positive optimistic press regarding our operations and not the gloom and doom which is too prevalent in the minds of many today Again I fully support your efforts to correct the nursing shortage but I hope that future use of supportive data in those efforts will be more factual and less distracting Thank you Administrator Roy E Barraclough Delta Community Medical Center iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiniiiMimiiiiiiiiimiiiiH Since I’ve been in Delta I’ve noticed that the town is certainly sports minded each year local teams compete in a number of sports events with great success the girls volleyball and Examples basketball teams boys football and wrestling teams and a number of slowpitch softball teams during the summer However it appears that not all of our residents are able to make or do not wish to participate in team sports Many of our young people find it easier to make their own teams or groups and play their own games For example witness the annual juniorsenior egg fight after seminary graduation Among other things that happened that night a motorcycle rider that happened to be passing through town was hit by a well placed egg and almost lost control We made a great impression of this man as he passed through our town I hope an impression is being made on the individual that threw the egg in the first place Perhaps some of these same kids have created what they think is a new Ward Goertz Rita Robinson When we think of drugs we think of pills or powder We don’t realize that alcohol is a drug in liquid form that is more dangerous Alcoholism is one of the most serious public health problems in the United States Among the 183 million adult “heavier drinkers” (those consuming more than 14 drinks per week) 121 million have one or more symptoms of alcoholism an increase of 82 percent since 1980 Alcohol is the most widely in America In 1981 the equivalent of 277 gallons of absolute alcohol was sold per person over age 14 This is about 591 cans of beer 115 fifths of table wine or 35 fifths of whiskey gin or vodka A tenth of the drinking population consumes half of the alcoholic beverages sold Alcohol abuse accounts for approximately 98000 deaths annually This includes cirrhosis and other medical motor consequences vehicle accidents and homicides suicides and nonmotor vehicle accidents Aldohol is known to cause or contribute to other fatal illnesses including cardiac myopathy hypertensive diseases pneumonia and several types of cancer The cost to the nation resulting from alcohol abuse and alcoholism in 1983 (the latest figures available) was $1 167 billion The economic impact in 1980 (current dollars) was $895 billion Alcoholism results in treatment reduced costs overall In a study of more than 20 million claim records between 1980 and 1983 alcoholic families services and incurred costs at twice the rate of similar families with no known alcoholic members The average alcoholic’s treatment cost was offset by reductions in other healthcare costs within two to three years following the start of treatment One out of three American adults-million Americans-hhad problems because of alcohol abuse in the family Chronic brain injury caused by alcohol is second only to Alzheimer’s disease as a known cause of mental deterioration but it is not progressive If the patient stops drinking the deterioration is arrested and substantial recovery can occur Children of alcoholics have a four times greater risk of My idea is only slightly more off the idea wall than “Breatharianism”--ththat you could live by air alone Wiley Brooks promoted just such nonsense in the early 1980’s when he appeared on the television show “That’s Incredible” What is really incredible is that he was getting $500 a head for his seminars before his hoax was exposed Times in Marcy 1983 An LA reported caught Brooks eating As recently as May of this year breatharianism seminars were being offered in Hawaii Getting back to flapping your Kroprinski successfully sued a meditation school in transcendental Iowa for $138000 The suit charge that the school was liable for psychological and emotional damage to Kroprinski association with the during his school The cause of his distress was that the school promised Kroprinski that he would learn to levitate However he was never able to get off the ground If you believe you can fly you procan lose bably also believe that you with “Dream weight while you sleep this Away” diet pills Unfortunately claim was too far out even for California where the district attorney fined the promoters $162000 for false advertising Although the previous examples of at there is a quackery can be laughed darker side to quackery Quacks rush in to reap profit from peoples’ tragedy For example quack cancer cures are was rampant One cancer cure quack caught promoting blood crisscrossing to cure cancer He removed blood from the right side of the body and injected it into the left side equally As you might expect heartless quacks are moving into the business of curing AIDS (Acquired ImBlack mune Deficiency Syndrome) market drugs Mexican clinics old psychological treatments and good vitamin C are all being foisted upon a panicky public My Opinion Children unattended by Dawn Carder Recently I had my old granddaughter in the car with me She was securely strapped in her seat for her protection and in compliance with the law However during the short ride to the grocery store her little hands were investigating everything within her reach-thandle for the windows any and all knobs the stick shift etc etc Her activity continued until we stopped and resumed on the return trip As I walk around Hinckley and Delta I frequently observe children left unattended in vehicles Some are very young even infants yet no one is around to provided safety and protection for them Often the temperature outdoors is hot windows are left open and the little ones are leaning out calling and waving to passers-bThey highway deaths are No killer of 15 to olds About 65 out of every 100 people in United States will be in an crash in their lifetime Alcohol is a contributing factor in at least 15000 fatal and 6 million nonfatal injuries in nonhighway settings Between 400 and 800 annual boating fatalities involve alcohol Alcohol is implicated in percent of all reported drownings Alcoholics are 10 times more likely to die from fires than nonalcoholics five to 13 times more likely to die from falls and commit suicide from six to 15 times more frequently than the general population Drinking is estimated to be involved in half of all cases 38 cases and 40 perpercent of cent of rape cases percent of jail inmates convicted of violent crimes were drinking before they committed the offense Alcohol is implicated in 62 percent of those convicted of assault and 49 percent of those convicted of murder or attempted murder Between 2 and 10 percent of people 65 and older experience some type of problem Approximately 25 percent of the population is on some form of medication By most measures older people consume more medication than any other age group putting them at high risk for drug and alcohol interaction Families In Focus is a new program devoted to the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse in families that are For more information or if you would like to volunteer please call Our is number also like my young granddaughter find many things in the vehicle that are intriguing to them At the reservoir too I’ve seen toddlers unattended at the water’s edge It takes only a moment for one to tumble over and go beneath the surface Why I wonder when our children are so precious to us are we so careless and unthinking? And why would they gamble with their entire future and in some cases their very life just for a temporary and elusive escape? Well the appropriate question is not how can they do it or why do they do it but what must be done as a result of their doing it The cold hard facts are that here in Utah a growing number of adolescents are becoming involved in drug use and abuse In the past society seemed to ignore or deny this problem The focus always seemed to be on bigger problems— war hunger disease But all of a sudden it seems attention has been drawn to some startling facts: The number cause of teenage fatalities is drunk driving The average drug abuser starts us12 ing at about years of age There are about 13000 high school students here in Utah who use drugs daily It often takes up to two years before their parents realize there’s a problem Without a question something has to be done and the answer lies not but with only with the adolescents their parents Only when parents are taught about the signs symptoms and stages of development of adolescent chemical will they be able to dependency educate their kids prevent the unrestricted development of the illness and intervene if and when the situation requires such action Unless such a process takes place parents will continue to be overwhelmed by the problems of adolescent chemical dependency As it stands right now we as a society are being beaten It’s time for action Since there is no question about the chemical of adolescent prevalence dependency here in Utah it becomes essentail for parents to develop the ability to identify these problems and to know what to do if they develop in the family Some of the most effective behaviors include: Stay calm There will be a tendency to panic but force yourself to maintain control Don’t jump into a confrontation before you are completely prepared You’ll lose Your preparation should include seeking outside professional assistance for intervention and treatment information Don’t accept promises that things will be different without major changes in behavior and attitude Sobriety quires more than not using It requires developing and implementing a new way of life with new friends new activities and new expectations Attend self help meetings such as and Tough Love Understand that you are not alone Examine and prioritize all options Seldom is there only one way to approach the problem Don’t get hooked into rescuing or Your child must take protecting responsibility for his actions And finally be the kind of model that your child can follow as a positive example The way you react the way you handle stress and the way you use drugs or medication will have a direct impact on your child’s recovery At best adolescent chemical dependency is difficult to deal with but as your knowledge and awareness of various options increase so will your confidence and effectiveness The best time to give Confidentially: advice to your children is when they’re still young enough to think you know what you’re talking about AMA Resolution ‘‘Resolved that the American Medical Association endorses the proinposition that drug dependencies are diseases and cluding alcoholism that their treatment is a legitimate part of medical practice and that the AMA encourage individual physicians and other health professionals medical and other health related organizations ar governments and other to become more aboi drug dependencies to base the policies and activities on recognitioi of drug dependency” |
