9 — — By Given Librarian Hunter Lost Golden Opportunity Upon the death of Dr Avard Fairbanks Dec 311 986 our great chance to have the bronze bust already designed by him for our Library was a missed opportunity lost forever Over a year ago we had contacted Dr Fairbanks about doing a bronze bust for us and he had done all the preliminary work including the design when our source of funds was withdrawn We had not formally received the funding but had a line on a company who had expressed interest in doing something ‘‘special” for the library who was going to honor President Fillmore When contacted after we had received a price the company had cooled off and suggested we find other sources of money Della Dame Edmunds (formerly of Fillmore) has been trying for years to get Dr Fairbanks’ statue of Millard Fillmore in the city She was personalwith the artist and told ly acquainted us about his desire to place a statue here Mrs Hunter met with Dr Fairbanks in Salt Lake City early in the spring 1986 He had with him drawings for his proposed work It was his desire to do a large outdoor piece but we could not see anyway to raise the money Very soon after he had his drawings completed for the bronze bust We were sorry to have to cancel out even sorrier now of the We were now thinking possibility of getting the statue done in 1987 and dedicated in 1988 All that is lost now The State House Museum has two of his fine pieces on display in the Legislative Room The planned bust would have taken about eight to ten months to complete as it would have been sent to Italy to a foundry there to cast after the initial work by the artist Upon its return the artist would have done the refining in his studio in Salt Lake City Dr Blaine Huntsman has ordered a photo of President Fillmore from the Library of Congress This will be matted and framed (Gallery quality) and hung in the entrance to the library The Library Board appreciates this fine It was ordered many weeks donation ago but has not arrived (Jan 2) Special Fine Arts Program January 8 will be a Special Program at Fine Arts (3:30 pm( at which time Robert Fredrickson president of the Utah Poetry Society will present a pro- -
