It’s a sad thing when we can’t even put something on the grave of a loved one for a few hours without someone stealing it Some day we will all have to answer for the things we do It should be interesting to see how you justify stealing from the dead Earl & Carol Frampton Feeling left out Dear Editor Recently I returned home from Germany where I spent three years in the Army While I was there I was involved in a lot of different competitive ball teams I enjoy sports just as much as the Other communities I have been in have tryouts to sec what skills you have or at the very least they place interested individuals on teams so they can expected li fe as one big issue Asarep Tier I look at When I see a potential story off I go to take a look Very often that requires participating to get a re al feel for the slice oflife angle (It’s the part I like best about my work vicarious Couldn't Have Said it Better photo by Kate Hellenbrand Panhorst soccer coach hands out Participation Awards to his team members during the All Youth Soccer Day held at Delta City Park All of the 383children who play on the teams also received a certification fora 16 ounce Slurpee from 7 Eleven Babe Dewolf chairperson and coach for the soccer group outlined some of the upcoming appearances of the soccer kids including the Fourth of July parade She also discussed a Sportsmanship Program that will be implemented hopefully next Fall wherein players coaches referees and spectators will be judged for sportsmanship behavior both on and off the field Fall signup recruitment is beginning now and Soccer has been recognized by the Millard County School Department as a letter sport “though we get no money "said Dewolf making the Booster Club even more important for those kids who want to play the world's most popular sport EDITOR our otlic must be disclosure would Editor: couldn’t help but be struck by the truly awesome symbolism of your front page photograph on May 14 A hot air balloon for Joe Cannon’s senate candicouldn’t have said it better dacy? myself The only thing missing was to have it covered in huge golden dollar signs RS Morrison V - TO THE letters physical wellbeing” feel better there I I decide to go down to the cafeteria where I have friends I be safe I eat some vegetables and heavenly potato salad and have my blood sugar level tested It’s okay I decide to have my blood pressure checked one more time while the first testing wailing for a chance to talk with “The Living Will" man hope that cuff around upstairs was a fluke My friend volunteers to check me again and wraps the my arm We laugh and joke while she pumps up the cuff and then she stops laughing she frowns she grows grave with concern "Oh Kate” she whispers (what s all this whispering!!) “You'd better go sec a doctor” Aaargh! I don't take bad news about my body well at all My body has been a good one strong responsive (I was tapdancing with the best of them well into my late 30s) I’ve always had the luxury of being able to take my body for granted for most of my life (Not minding the intermittent aches and pains) It has never failed me But now it’s breaking down and I don't know what to do It's really really scary And confusing And ultimately not entirely in my control This is new to me I confess I bolted from the Health Fair I didn't get my skin checked for cancer blood scan The I didn’t undergo the foot screening I missed out on the warn me I had heard enough I’m Health Fair had done what it was intended to do going to see the doctor I’m going to take my medicine I'm going to get a handle on this physical stuff I’m going to restore my body to ultimate health (Or die trying!) I've found “the perfect house” I’ve got the perfect job I want the perfect body Of course I've blown all this out of proportion The doctor will probably tell me it's nothing that I just need to cat less exercise more things I already know And in the scope of things this isn’t disastrous news It was great fodder for a column and hopefully it made a cute story Now I’m awaiting the Mammogram Van albeit somewhat anxiously I’ve never had a mammogram and lots of people tell me it's lime The Van is coming to Delta again and I’ve made an appointment I hope that becomes a cute story tixi one with a happy ending PS On a much more serious health and healing note my very best friend is gravely ill with Cancer I cannot begin to comprehend her sense of betrayal her anger her sadness her hurt and her joy for another day: Lcilani Heavenly Flower my prayers arc with you Please become healthy and well again I need you Leilani the world needs you I need your friendship your unique truths your generosity your vision your humor I need you to continue to show me who I am by your incredible ability to cut through the sound and fury to get to the heart You got to my heart and that’s where you live always We have shared so much There are so many other things to share You have always loved me and I’ve been safe in your love Know too that I love you deeply as a sister as a mother as a daughter as a friend Please become well Please stay here with me - 1 Lit V Community Calendar Mondays - 4 CUFS Food Bank pm 162 West 100 South Delta Tuesdays Basic Life Skills classes 7 9 pm Turning Point Delta Technical Center No Charge Overeaters Anonymous group meeting 5:30pm Fillmore Library Special Collections Room No Charge Call 743 6658 4th Tuesday Social Security Rep Delta City Offices Tuesday Wednesday Thursdays Lunch at M E Bird Center for Seniors pm Lunch at Pahvant Senior Center for Seniors noon The Millard County Chronicle Progress USPS Published every Thursday at Delta Utah 84624 by Locked DuWiI at 40 Publishing 300 W Deia Utah Pub1 Susan Rnr'Ar Dutson B RH J rtn'jl Kate Hellenbrand AJvetS'pg Julie Ward Goertz Design t Riley Wood Sales Accounting Sales Craig W Church Evelyn Mallet Fillmore Rec Office Mgr Circu'abcn Julie Ward Goertz Circulation Comp W Church Circulation Prod Craig COet'al Pr’'nr Shellie Dutson Subscriptions In Advance In County $2000 per year $1300 per 6 months Out ot County - $2500 per year 50 cents Single Copy POSTMASTER: Send Address changes to PO Box 249 Delta UT S4624 Advertising Rates on Request Second Class Postage Paid at Delta UT 84624 Delta: FAX: Fillmore: DUWIL OWNED PUBLISHING COMPANY BY SUSAN B DUTSON 4 WILIAM V WILSON Fillmore Utah Family History Center open afternoons until 10 pm 2nd Wednesdays Holden Firemen’s Auxiliary regular meetings 8 pm Fire Station 4th Wednesiday Social Security Rep Fillmore City Offices 8:30 am - 12:30 pm Thursdays TOPS meets at Delta Middle School dining room 5 pm Judge Stanley K Robison Justice Court 9 am - noon & - 5 pm Story Hour Fillmore Library 3 - 4 pm Beginning June 4 Saturdays Fillmore Family History Center open 7 am - norm May 9 - 22 Traveling Art Exhibit “Works on Paper" Delta High Art Gallery May 21 Field Rep Utah State Retirement Delta City Offices am - 4 pm Delta High School Graduation 7 pm DHS Gym Millard High School Graduation 8 pm MHS Gym May 22 & 23 POPPY DAYS in Delta May 23 50th DHS Class reunion for Class of 1942 Delta Regional Park Manzanita Avenue noon brunch 6 pm dinner Dancing after 60th DHS Class Reunion for Gass of 19324 - 8 pm M E Bind Center 238 West 100 South Delta James L and Mary B Anderson 50th Wedding Anniversary open house 7 - 9 pm Oak City Cultural Hall May 24 Elder Shawn Gondcr mission farewell 11:50 am Garrison Branch LDS Church Elder John D Pruitt mission farewell :50 am Leamington Ward Elder Michael Dean Gates mission farewell 1:50 am Holden May 25 Great Basin Museum open pm Dora P Whatcott90th birthday celebration Kanosh Ward Cultural Hall May 27 Holden Firemen’s Auxiliary quilt tie 7 pm May 27 28 29 61 st Annual Millard County Jr Livestock Show Millard County Fairgrounds May 26 - 30 Mobile Mammography Van Delta Community Medical Center upport To the editor: The annual Girl Scout cookie sale in Utah is over for another year One thing is for sure Utah Girl Scouts know how to sell cookies and Utah consumers know how to buy them! On behalf of the more than 8000 girls who participated in this year’s more than 800 Girl Scout troops- -I want to thank the people of Utah for giving in to your cookie cravings again this year We sold 1149432 boxes of cookies a new high The enthusiasm of our girls coupled with your terrific support produced a 17 percent sale increase over last year’s sale What you may not know is that the success story continues through challenging Girl Scout program activities funded by the cookie sale All the money raised in Utah stays in Utah for the Girl Scout program The cookie sale is just one powerful example of what can be accomplished in a successful partnership There is more to Girl Scouting than just selling cookies The girls cultivate a sense of responsibility marketing and money management skills while they earn activity credits for Girl Scout program opportunities and camp The leaders commit themselves to caring about Utah’s future enough to help nurture the skills girls need today to be resourceful citizens in Utah's communities of tomorrow As a Girl Scout volunteer of many years I know firsthand the worthwhile benefits of being part of this program Being appreciated is one of them It feels good to be thanked If you know a Girl Scout volunteer in your neighborhood at work within your social circles thank her thank him We appreciate you forsupporting the 992 Girl Scout cookie sale and we look forward to your continued support this year as Girl Scouting celebrates its 80th anniversary! Pam Russell Volunteer Cookie Chair Utah Girl Scout Council “Do you know Lady of Spain ?"asks a Fillmore resident while she enjoys accordion playing by Karen Keightley respiratory therapist with Interwest Medical one of the screening booths at Fillmore’s Health Fair Home and School: Vital Links Cyclist enjoying America Dear editor: My name is Joseph A Hastings My live at 35 W Anmother and derson Stockton CA 95206 Phone is am riding a bicycle (209) across America I started in Boston and will end in Stockton at Mom’s This has been a long trip I started last July and bicycled to Cortez Colorado I stayed there where I from Nov 1991 to April 1992 In I started traveling again towards California A bicycle trip is a very good way to see the US of A An average speed is about 10 mph so that in an 8 hour day I 70 to 80 miles At this speed it is easy go to stop and see whatever I want to see I am a gardener The garden is what I enjoy seeing most The garden is located everywhere there is earth Across America we grow a big big garden There arc 700 million acres of soybean and 700 million acres of com and millions of acres of everything else The garden is divided into lines that really do not ex ist but we make believe that they do Since the seed of a vegetable or of a fruit has no knowledge of garden boundaries the seed crosses all the boundaries and contained within the seed is life and when it is affected by plague trouble results President ForexamplepriortoleavingBoston in May 1991 I planted Pinto Beans I bought the Pinto Beans at Star Market in Brookline Mass located on Commonwealth Blvd The package stated that the beans were from Colorado my home state When my beans grew they grew but so did plague First saw the larva then the standard bean beetle that affects beans everywhere How did plague get to Boston? I was the only person planting Pinto Beans The plague came contained within the seed This means that not only is it in the seed but when we eat the beans we receive a bit of trouble too Beans are one of m any types of seeds bearing vegetables and fruits I know of Pinto Beans because I know how they are grown in Cortez I see and have seen across America that every type of seed as that grown contains the same problem contained in Fhnto Beans What to do? A problem stops being such when it is seen In order to see like when I’m riding my bicycle I have to I keep my eyes open and see otherwise will get run over I do not want that to happen because seeing America is really fun Let's all together see and work at eliminating plague Joseph A Hastings Gardener by LILY ESKELSEN Utah Education Association It’s only a game I was a teacher’s aide before I got my teaching certificate That’s where learned that with kids there’s no such thing as “only a game" I rounded up the ear olds to play musical chairs It lasted approximately two minutes before the tears broke loose The first child out looked perplexed that he had no chair when the music stopped He cried as I led him away from the circle He wanted to play The second child out began to cry The other children began to look frightened as another chair taken was It was about this lime that my yet away instincts kicked into gear slowly forming the message: “These kids don’t seem to be having much fun" We stopped and quickly organized another game: Follow the Leader We took turns being the Leader being in charge being No one cried silly Kids lake games seriously and games can teach important lessons But as parents and teachers we must understand where games fit in the evolution of the child's life For very young children games can teach cooperation the need to lake turns and pride in success The down side of course is that many games are based on competition with clear winners and losers And there’s nothing wrong with that— if you’re dealing with children who are emotionally ready to lose and even more important to win It takes time to teach kids appropriate behavior for winning and losing Play games with your children Model for them the behavior of a winner who doesn’t gloat and a loser who congratulates his opponent Whetheryou’re playing Monopoly or soccer or Go Fish your altitude will eventually allow your child to see that it’s only a game I |
