understand it I’m no sociologist or anthropologist but it seems to me that most cultures have the same human aspects: they laugh they cry they learn they work But what they laugh and cry and learn As a subscriber to the Chronicle Proabout and how they work are what gress I am aware of plans being conmake the differences sidered for a hazardous waste inWell I don’t want to get too cinerator in the Delta area As a contheoretical I’d rather just tell you what cerned Nevada neighbor I think your I see readers will be interested in the article I’m amazed at how “service” mindfrom the Lincoln County Record at ed the Japanese are In the office at Caliente Nevada Also enclosed is a school when I was protesting that I copy of a letter to the editor that I didn’t want to rent a kerosene heater wrote in 1986 when Nevada was but an electric one one of my preparing its Hazardous Waste Plan (See articles on arguments was that I would have to Management carry 18 liters of kerosene to my house page 1) because I have no car The office hazardous At that time workers just smiled and called Joe waste firms were greedily eyeballing Dote He’s about 65 years old owns Nevada to incinerate and dump toxic a Mobile service station about 10 and hazardous wastes that were problocks from my house He was raised hibitively expensive to dispense of and in Sacramento but when he was about Nevada in their states unwanted 14 his father sent him to Japan to go residents spoke out strongly against to school The war broke out and he hazardous and toxic materials being never went “home” He speaks great or transported processed dumped as in Japan English English goes through our state and Nevada now has punctuated with “yah” instead of “so a tough Hazardous Waste Management desu nay” Plan approved in July 1987 Even though his wife speaks no After Nevada’s tough stance it now firms are English whenever I called the station appears that the she understood that I needed kerosene looking to Utah to import hazardous and someone would come and fill the compounds Examples are the recent5 gal (18 liter) plastic container I left ly approved toxic sites between outside my door and Salt Lake City and at Delta Lots of things are left outside doors I am unaware of Utah’s Hazardous Waste Management Plan but you can The stairwell of my apartment building is sometimes dotted with dishes plates find information re hazardous waste and soup bowls clean and wrapped in from the Nevada Department of Enplastic That means the lady of the vironmental Quality at the address house called out for food that was given on my enclosed letter delivered not in boxes but real I think you should also be aware of chinaware She washed it and later scam in Wells Nevada the some delivery boy would pick it up a year ago in which the firm promised In my neighborhood the streets are in an ultimate and safety jobs narrow and when the bus comes economically depressed area and then really left a toxic spill that contaminated the all traffic stops and allows it to go by some particularly thin spots For that ground water in the area near the prothere is a flagman who sits on a chair cessing site and required federal EPA reading or smoking until the bus comes funds for cleanup If you are unaware of this toxic scam I can furnish you then he stops traffic The bus goes by and for the next 12 minutes he reads with several articles Delta being an agricultural area I’m again (Buses come every 12 minutes in is a the daytime) sure ground water pollution Which is another aspect of the serprimary concern to everyone there One reads or hears on the news daily about vice given in this society Buses go everywhere and I guess Hiroshima has hazardous chemical spills nationwide more buses than most cities because that force people to evacuate their when I first arrived they said homes I hope you find my letter informative and you can print all or part of it if you wish I hope Delta residents choose not to have a toxic future If I can be of further assistance please call John Breitrick Consulting Geologist Nevada neighbor speaks out Fillmore Area Delta Area Jeffer Kv Reed B Ju T Rogrrs Without clouds and other constituents of the Earth's atmosphere the surface of our planet would reach a 176 degrees at the temperature of equator by day Five years ago a group of educators published a brief piece of advice to America’s high school students The advice wasn’t highly publicized because it was a small piece of a big booklet titled “A Nation at report-t- Risk” That advice was: “You forfeit your chance for life at its fullest when you withhold your best effort in learning When you give only the minimum to learning you receive the minimum in return “Even with your parents’ best example and your teachers’ best efforts in the end it is your work that determines how much and how well you learq “When you work to your full capacity you can hope to attain the knowledge and skills that will enable you to create your future and control your destiny If you do not you will have your future thrust upon you by others “Take hold of your life apply your gifts and talents work with dedication and “Have high expectations of yourself and convert every challenge into an opportunity” Breathes there a father or mother who could have given a young person better advice? Those words would well be framed and placed on the wall of every child’s bedroom Yes that includes even the kids who can’t yet read write or count to ten If that message is one of the first things they learn they’ll have a good start in school Community Calendar Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore 9 a m noon & Mon & Thurs pm Delta Wed 9 a m noon & pm Renewals any working day at Millard County Offices April 13 Prenatal course begins at Fillmore 7 30 Medical Center Community 9:30 pm May 2 - Want to do a little window shopping long distance? Just a minute I’ll go see what the salesman has today OK I’m back He has Crocodile polo shirts regularly priced Y5600 (That’s $4300) marked down 50 percent The Crocodile logo is on the chest the material which but says it is 100 percent cotton doesn’t feel 100 percent cotton was made in Japan the sewing was done in Korea Puma brand shirts are Y2800 ($2150) There’s a JVC Victor video camera for Y178000 marked down to Y142500 ($136920 to $109614) He also has Spaulding shoes men’s black leather walking shoes with rubber soles on sale from Y12000 yen to Y9800 ($9230 to $7538) Speaking of sports shoes last week in the newspaper Reebok had a full page ad saying that many products are being sold in Japan with the name of Reebok but they aren’t genuine The company has begun putting a gold seal on their packages and products so that a customer knows he has a genuine product Artificial products are rampant in Japan but the prices of goods are so high that everyone flocks to the cheaper product whether it is genuine or not The County Agent Notice on annual egg fight For the past several years young people in Delta have staged an annual egg fight No individual or organization sponsors the eggs fight but it happens each year according to Millard County Attorney Warren Peterson Each year the past few years local law enforcement agencies have received complaints of vandalism property damage and similar reports resulting law from the egg fight Consequently enforcement agencies have processed adult criminal cases and juvenile cases for those participating in the event Law enforcement agancies have been reluctant to take such action according to Peterson but have felt compelled to of egg fight protect the property victims This year Fourth District Juvenile Court Probation Officer Peter Jacobson and Mr Peterson met with a group of high school students described by Peterson as “capable and intelligent” Jacobson and Peterson attempted to dissuade the school students from participation in the event but the students expressed the opinion that the event would occur regardless of law enforcement efforts The students did say that they would attempt to arrange a time and location where the egg fight can be conducted on private property with the landowner’s and in a permission fashion what would not create problems that have occurred in the past Law enforcement officials have pressed hope that these students’ efforts will be successful Law enforcement officials are still concerned according to Peterson He said officials are still concerned that the competitive nature of the event and the role playing in tactics by the participants creates substantial risk of injury Peterson said the students addressed these concerns during the meeting held with Jacobson and Peterson Peterson said however “I don’t think the students fully appreciate the inherent risk of this activity Instead I think the element of risk heightens the excitement for the participants I don’t want to be prudish but I hope some common sense from the students and their parents will steer tham away from the egg fight” Peterson said that if the egg fight causes problems again this year he will request local law enforcement agencies issue citations and make arrests as appropriate “We want to give fair warning that we will pursue severe and appropriate penalties to those who are arrested or receive citations for egg fighting Last year there were two circumstances one involving an infant girl and another volving a motorcycle rider which could have resulted in serious injury I’m afraid we have to take a serious view of what may seem to be harmless pranks under the circumstances" Peterson said The Crickets are coming and I thought snails were grossl by Larry Campbell Millard County USU Extension Agent The Mormon crickets are not really true crickets at all They belong to the katydid family Never the less when the populations gets out of control they are devastating They began to hatch about a month ago and they are presently in their fourth of six stages of development Once they hatch they begin to move on some predetermined course They can travel up to a mile a day stopping at night and for cold harsh weather This causes them to heap up in piles The crickets eat everything that is not nailed down If you find three adult crickets in a square yard on an acre basis they will eat as much as a cow and calf in a day If there are five they will eat 44 percent of the feed available to cattle If there are 10 per square yard on a section basis they will consume 120 tons of forage on a dry matter basis during their life span They have been worse in the Oak City area but there are new spots of infestations- - one near Kanosh A team effort is being made to control the Mormon crickets as they hatch from their nesting areas using a minimum of chemicals The BLM and Forest Service have crews spreading cricket bait right now on their lands The Utah Department of Agriculture has made the baits also available to the private land owners at original cost The bait will cost private land owners $1450 for 50 pounds Dean Anderson has kindly agreed to handle the bait for the Oak City area The Extension office in Fillmore will also carry the bait for the East side of the county I will keep a few bags in the trunk of my car as I visit farmers The bait is made of rolled barley impregnated with a 5 percent solution of carbyle (this is the same product you use in your garden under the 5 percent seven label) The bait is spread at the rate of 10 pounds per acre It will not hurt cattle or wildlife unless they get to a bag left out in the back of your truck and tank up It cannot be put within 200 feet of water and should only be used to treat areas with cricket It should not be used as populations a preventative-on- ly as a treatment--anthen only where it’s needed We are currently trying to control this generation as they hatch before they can damage crops and stop thus stop next year’s generation as well Sports Med A program guide for throwers Baseball and softball teams around the nation are taking advantage of the as they ready spring temperatures themselves for the rigors of competition Whether in you participate organized sports or are part of the “weekend warrior” frenzy proper preparation and conditioning can go a long way toward making your season The followproductive and ing tips are from Tom Curcan ATC athletic trainer for US National Soccer Team and supervisor of athletic training at St Anthony Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Center Your first responsibility should be to make sure any old injuries have been resolved and rehabilitated appropriately If you are still troubled with last year’s aches and pains now is a good time for a checkup with your local sports medicine expert Before entering the season old conditions should be addressed The second and conditioning phase of your preseason program should beThe ing slowly and build gradually conditioning period should be four to six weeks prior to the first ball pitched and should include flexibility and strength training Resistance training must be done through a full range of motion to maintain flexibility but all throwers should be extra careful to crease flexibility at the shoulders Flexibility is crucial for efficient safe throwing Inflexibility of the pectoral muscles will decrease the ability to externally rotate the arm Pre and post practice stretching of the chest muscles and Internal rotators of the shoulder will preserve this most precious motion in throwing Strength training is widely accepted as a perfect compliment to any sport As the season rolls along activity fatigue and tissue breakdown become critical factors When resistance training is used in conjunction with pre and numerous conditioning studies indicate athletes have more “staying power” therefore less fatigue and ultimately less injuries Shoulder musculature which need are the external rotators tention biceps triceps shoulder abductors and forearm muscles As with flexibility the most important group to work are the muscles which make up the rotator cuff These key muscles tend to be nored in a standard shoulder weight program Heavy weights should be avoided in season because the thrower becomes predisposed to numerous types of problems such as impingement bursitis and tendonitis High low weight exercise is repetition recommended to compliment the muscle endurance aspect of resistance work A strength area which is generally overlooked in throwers is leg power Every good throwing coach will tell you that the majority of force generated in any throwing motion comes directly out of the hips and legs It only makes sense to work the quadriceps and hamstring muscles both for power and for endurance just as you would work out the shoulder Training the legs has a twofold benefit because these changes also carry over into hitting performance The third step of this program is to slowbegin pitching or throwing ly Throw the ball easily from short distances (mound to home) then a bit further (first to home) then second to home and finally outfield to home Build slowly so as you increase your distance you also gradually build the force with which you throw This building principle should be employed both in practice sessions and also for warmup As you train the muscles to perform with this method they will become and more resistant to injury stronger Each time you play a proper warmup is important to maintain a healthy shoulder and staying warm during long innings is also important If your shoulder does get sore especially early in the season use ice after activity for minutes This will reduce local inflammation At the first sign of trouble isolate what areas you are overtraining and adjust your routine accordingly The longer you push an injury the harder it is to cure quickly Seek medical attention if the problem seems to be gettng worse or lasts for several weeks Staying on the ballfield is everyone’s ultimate goal but that can only be accomplished with slow safe increases in training and preparation for all actions to be performed in a gameA reasonable approach to exercise will keep most athletes active in their chosen sport for many seasons to come Enjoy! |
