Bangerter made an inspection of medical facilities in Delta during a swing through rural Utah Tuesday Pictured above with the dignitaries is Chronicle Progress publisher Sue Dutson who is a member of the state's Rural Health Advisory Committee Local officials told the senator and governor that Millard County shares in the problems afflicting rural health care throughout the state Those problems include limited access of care shortages of skilled manpower and economic duress of rural communities Gov Bangerter noted as he did when he dedicated the county's hospitals in 1985 that Millard County was bucking a trend that as stiff comis seeing many rural health care facilities petition in urban areas attract patients away from rural areas County commissioners said they are concerned that unless more federal government support is available services at the newly constructed IHC hospitals in Delta and Fillmore will have to cut services making it even more difficult for those facilities to compete with other health care providers Senior Citizens (65 and older) $15 in county Mrs Ekins is remembered as the coeditor of “Milestones of Millard” published in 1952 by the Daughter of Utah Pioneers as part of the county’s centennial commemoration Though currently out of print the history book is in constant demand and is considered the most complete single work on the area to date In addition her writing career included 53 years as contributor to local and state newspapers Her creative abilities also extended to oil painting She gained local and statewide recognitions for her work some of which is on display in various local business establishments She was born Feb 25 1912 in Hinckley to Leigh Richmond and Lula Bishop Cropper She married George A Ekins Sept 12 1934 in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints She attended Brigham Young University after graduation from Hinckley High School where she was given the Distinguished Service Award She was the first woman to serve on the Hinckley Town Board and chairman for five years of the Millard County Fair She also headed the beautification campaign that won Hinckley the state’s Over 350 friends relatives and ac- quaintances of Darlene Fowler last Saturday gathered together February 9th at Fillmore Elementary for a benefit dinner in Darlene’s behalf The Darlene “Iodine” Fowler Western Benefit was a huge success as over $22000 was raised to help offset the costs of Darlene’s rehabilitation The stricken Fillmore native has been rehabilitation at Holy undergoing Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City She suffered a cardiac arrest last summer following abdominal surgery and spent 3 months in a coma Although she is now conscious and alert she is barely able to communicate and most of the tasks of daily living must be performed for her Harvey Fowler Darlene’s husband reported to the large audience about her progress Surgery had been performed earlier in the week to relieve the constrictures in the limbs on one side of Darlene’s body Her constricted limbs have immobilized Darlene since she awoke from her coma In an emotional impromptu Harvey speech thanked the community for their un“If precedented support saying Darlene does ever walk again we have all of you folks to thank” The audience responded with a resounding standing ovation The community response to Darlene’s plight was phenomenal When organizers Linda Davies and Susan Ferguson met a month earlier to plan the fundraising efforts they set an initial goal of $20000 enough to pay for 5 to 6 months of therapy They were hopeful that possibly a third of that amount could be raised through the Western Benefit But as the dinner began nearly $13000 had already been raised Later in the evening an auction war held to raise some additional funds Abe Johnson and Clay Cummings alternated as auctioneers with the assistance of Jack Davies Abe Johnson announced at the beginning “There’s benefit auctions and there’s bargain auctions This is a benefit auction for Darlene” The people responded by bidding up items to exorbitant prices to help “cleanest city” award in Utah centenial year her life she served in During church and educational numerous positions Her later years saw no slowing of activity as she served for 15 years as coordinator for the Millard County Council of Aging and director of adult education for the Millard School District for 10 years Her dedication to civic involvement was highlighted by a medal for Senior Citizen in the “Outstanding State” given by former Gov Calvin L Rampton She was a member of the West Millard Hospital board and served on the committee for the “Days of the Old West” celebration at Deseret for six years Trailer owner arrested as arson suspect in own fire Delta man has been A arrested on aggravated arson charges for allegedly starting the Jan 26 fire which destoryed his mobile home to Delta City Police According Stacey Troy Bronson admited during an interview that he had set the fire which destroyed his trailer He was then charged with the first degree felony and held in the Millard County Jail at Fillmore on $5000 bail He subsequently posted bond and was released Officials said the arrest culminated an investigation conducted by the Delta City Police Millard County Sheriff’s Office the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Delta City Fire Department Fire officials had previously thought the fire started as a delyed reaction from a small fire the previous day Investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office however resulted in the blaze being outstanding civic church and education leader Sebrina Cropper Ekins of Hinckley She died of heart failure Thursday Feb 5 1987 at Utah Valley Regional She was Medical Center in Provo $18 00 out of Clarification An editor’s note in last week’s paper attempting to correct a rumor associating Willie Corbett’s death with the drug death of an hunter last fall has apparently created more confusion Mr Corbett’s has not been determined by state officials and there is no indication it was in any way related The newspaper’s intendrug tion was to report the drug related death of the hunter and stop the rumors that Mr Corbett’s death was drug related It was not our intention to associate or connect Mr Corbett’s death in anyway with drugs or drug use We regret the misunderstanding and apologize to the community had united in support of Darlene to raise over $22000 towards Darlene’s rehabilitation This included a matching donation pledged from Roy administrator of the Barraclough Fillmore Community
