Show MILFORD FORTY-NINERS AND RACE MEET WAS OUTSTANDING SUCCESS 'f Hundreds of visitors jammed Milford last Friday and Saturday Satur-day for the 1956 renewal of the American Legion Forty-Niners, and to meet the distinguished Legion guests, Gov. and Mrs. J. Bracken Lee, Dan Valentine, and Ted Cannon. T.he town was crowded both days, and standing stand-ing room was at a premium Saturday Sat-urday afternoon for the annual parade. Friday's race meet, with seven sev-en races and seven popular gymkhana events entertained the celebrants during the after- noon, and an informal dance at night, with the Legion Comics furnishing the music, lasted until un-til almost daylight. The Saturday chuckwagon breakfast was, as always, a popular pop-ular feature, and LaMar Lund of the White Market, and his Legion assistants were swamped from 6 a. m. to 9:30. Dave Morris, Ted Cannon and Dan Valentine were still measuring meas-uring the queen contestants as Governor and Mrs. Lee arrived, and after welcomes and introductions, intro-ductions, the judging was continued con-tinued at the Legion Hall while Mrs. Gordon Murdock prepared dinner for the visitors. Judy Baxter was proclaimed proclaim-ed Queen of the Forty-Niners, with Lynne Bracken and Iola Young as attendants. They were honored at the race meet, in the parade, and at the Saturday dance. The Hong Kong float, depicting depict-ing a Chinese garden with attractive at-tractive lanterns hanging from an arbor, and Chinese girls seated seat-ed under the arbor, won first prize in the parade. Second place went to the Lady Firemen, and third place to the Lady Trainmen. Mayor H. Gottfredson of Circleville won the special Mayor's Horse Race and was presented a Champion Racing Mayor trophy by Gov. Lee. ' Mayor Ray Kizer of Milford was second, and Mayor Flint Wright of Hurricane nosed out Mayor Milton Albrecht of Minersville for third.
