Show PAGE 8 Roll Sports Em Over and Pin Em by:Chris Helms Friday, January by:Margaret Burnham The Templar Wrestling team has been pushing their limits as they have come away with numerous individual and team wins and awards. Starting the week returning from Christmas break, the Templars hosted the South Summit Wildcats. Wins Gcdeon Jarvis, Aaron Bean, from Manti include Luke Denton. Gcdeon Jarvis. Jesse Strickland, and a finishing w in for the Wasps phy sical abilities. The only w ins were by Aaron Bean and Jesse Strickland by Brandon Olson. Although the Templars put up a good fight, they fell short of the overall team win. On January the entire team participated in a 16 team tournament in Mt. Pleasant. On the varsity level, Rich 0, Hales and Matt Grindstaff placed 6th, Gcdeon Jarvis 5th, Brandon Olson 4th, and Jessie Strickland won 1st place in his weight division. The hard work paid off as the Templars took 10th place out of 19 teams. Wrestlers of the Week were awarded to Brandon Olson and Jessie Strickland. Manti had a busy week with North Sevier on January 14th, and Juab on the 15th. Wins by Riley Anderson, Jesse Strickland, and Rich laics helped the w rcstlers to tic North Sevier. Brandon Olson tore a ligament and was injured I during his match and was forced to default. In Juab, the Templars were not prepared Rich Hales. As Manti traveled to Monroe to challenge the South Sevier Rams, wins by Riley Anderson, Gcdeon Jarvis, Aaron Bean. Jesse Strickland, Rich Hales, and Clint Kjar, assisted in a vigorous Manti Win. As the Templars rivaled with the Gunnison Bulldogs, Manti proved a miraculous win of 63-1- 5 Adding the four Gunnision forfeits to pins by Luke Denton, Clint Kjar, Jesse Strickland, Aaron Bean, and Matt Grindstaff. The Templars will have wrestled in North Summit on January 29th. The team is hosting a Father and Son night to honor them and their parents on February 5 th. Lets Put This Track to Use 23 Manti s region record dropped 3 and 3 after a tough loss to to ranked Grantsvillc CowManti experienced some st quarter woes as Grantsvillc jumped out to a 29 to 8 lead. Manti dug themselves a hole that they could never jump out of and in the end they suffered a tough loss 57 to 74 even though they scored 30 points in the 4th quarter. the 1 boy s. 1 Wednesday, January 21 Manti dropped a big game at the hands of rival Juab. Manti came out cold and were never able to get into their offense. Karl Cox was the only Templar with double digit scoring; he had 14. Connor Thompson, Joey Callistcr, Jeff Bahlman, and Nicl Lund each had 4 points. This was a game the Templars must put behind them if they want to make a run for the region championship. Friday, January 16 Manti moved their record to 1 with a 54 to 49 win over a quick St. Joseph's team Manti had trouble with the half-coustyle of St. Joseph's in the first half, but a 3 point shot by Karl Cox at the end of the second half put Manti ahead 22-- 2 . In the 3rd Quarter Manti began 3-- by: Margaret Burnham After talking with Coach Rapier, the 1998 Track season is looking very positive. Last y ear's track scored high in the record books breaking nine women's records and three men's. The freshmen alone set 10 new school records. Rapier said that with so many underclassmen returning, the track team is again, bound for success for this upcoming season. Manti is planning on hosting at least one or two mods at the new ly installed track. In fact, there will be a Junior High invitational hosted on home ground on May 23, 1998. Coach Rapier wants to encourage anyone with guts and glory to participate on the track team. The great thing is, that anyone interested can be a part of the team. Track is a sport of competing against personal time and distance, and satisfy ing to see how far one's will can be pushed. Good luck 1998 track team! rt 1 pulling away, off of pressure s. defense and fast break In the 4th, St. Joseph's run was withheld by the Templars and at the end of the game Manti lead 54 to 49. Manti had 4 players with 10 points or more (Connor Thompson 13, Kenny Cox 13, Karl Cox 12, Nicl Lund 10.) Manti 's full court defense created 14 steals and 18 turnovers and Manti out rebounded St. Joe's 34 to 20, lay-up- Wednesday, January 14 Manti won their second region 12 game in Kamas, against South Summit. Manti dominated the game, pulling to a 7 to 10 1st quarter lead, and 8 1 31-1- lead heading into the locker room. They found themselves in a commanding head position ing into the 4th quarter with a 50 to 29 lead. When the final buzzer sounded Manti had defeated South Summit with a 66 to 50 victory. Manti's defense forced a sloppy South Summit team into 20 turnovers (Kurt Kicscl 5, Connor Thompson 4.) The scoring of Connor Thompson, 14 points, and Karl Cox, 12 points, and the great all around play by Nicl Lund (8 points, 4 rebounds) in only 18 minuets lead the Templars to victory. Friday, January 9 Manti dropped their first region game to cross county rival, Gunnison. The second ranked Bulldogs pulled ahead quickly-leadinat the end of the 1st, 5 to 13. Mantis tough defense helped them claw their way back into the game, holding Gunnisons star Aaron Hill to 4 points. With three minutes left Manti had pulled to within 3 points of Gunnison, but down the stretch, the good foul shooting and tough defense by Gunnison, was too much for the Templars. Manti proved that they are not just a speed bump, rather they arc a road block, to Gunnison's search for a Region 12 title. 7 Wednesday, January Manti had some highlights and some low lights, in their first region game of the season. Manti found themselves trailing almost the whole game, to a very tough South Summit team. I lowcvcr, just as South Summit thought they had put the nail in the coffin, Manti went on a 4th quarter run, triggered by pres- sure defense and easy baskets. When the quarter had ended Manti and South Summit were dead locked at 40. In the extra period Manti dominated their opponents, outscoring them 9 to 4, giving Manti their first victory of the season. Karl Cox and Kurt Kicscl both put in 0 points and Nicl Lund added 8 points. 1 Connor Thompson came up with a game changing 9 steals and added 7 assists. |
