To the editor: When I was a youngster I helped put glitter on our homemade family Christmas card. Its message was plain: More powerful than the atomic bomb, TI IE GOLDEN RULE. Likewise today I believe an honest application of the Golden Rule would be far more effective than any menagerie of zoning laws for Manti. The world, holding the environment supreme, seeks progress and change in human behavior from the outside in. Force of law is the favored tool. The better way, which preserves and fosters liberty, is to work from the inside out. I lencc the supreme value of the Divine Injunction, Do unto others as you would be done by. The classic observation that America is great because she is good has never been so important. The good has inevitably come as laws and conduct have been measured and brought into harn standards, mony with such as the Ten Commandments, the Golden Rule and the Constitution of the United States. Whether the concern of the moment is crisis in the White House or Mantis zoning law, there needs to be a continued and determined effort to choose the course of action which is consistent with these great verities. As I approached the car, a young boy about to three ears old began to cry and scream. I he closer I came to the car, you could sec extreme terror in his eyes. As I went to the drivers window, he went to the very back of the station wagon. After I reccised the license and registration. I asked the woman w hat was wrong w ith her son. She stated, Earlier told my son that if he didn't behave, the police were going to come and take him away. So a few minutes later I stop this woman for speeding and you can 1 1 imagine the thoughts going through this young child's mind. It took me ten minutes, two people not us! Next, because of the way you panic and make them sit down or hide, and tell them you or they w ill get in trouble by the police, you instill a fear of police officers. This really works to your advantage! If for some reason something happens to your child, say they get lost or need other help, they wont go to the first officer they see because they are afraid of us. So the harder we look for your child, the harder he or she hikes from us. What a badges, and a small flashlight to gain this childs trust and to make him understand that he wasn't in trouble, his mother was. For those of you that teach your children to duck or sit real still, you may fool me once or tw ice, but w ho are you really fooling? I low are you going to deal with injuring or killing your child because you wont take a couple of minutes to make sure your children are rid ing properly restrained. You as parents set the example for your children. If you only obey the laws or rules you want to, so will they. If you wont wear a safety belt, neither will they. Its called parenting. Whether you want to be or not, you are a powerful example to your children. So now instead of taking a few minutes to make sure that children ride properly restrained, we teach them to duck down in the eat and sit real still so they cant be seen or it looks like they might be restrained in a seat belt. So as parents, what are we teaching our children? first we let them know that there are laws or rules you dont have to obey if you dont want to.
