Ephraim, Moroni voting districts rearranged in county business By Shirley Buhlmann Sanpete County Commissioners held a short meeting Wednesday, January 27, for the purpose of making decisions on some timely issues. Kristine Anderson presented the suggested div isions of the new voting districts in Moroni and Ephraim. The Moroni district was formerly divided in a NorthSouth line at 00 West Street, vv ith voters in the two districts numbering approximately 450 and 250. The new line div ides Moroni at 00 East Street, making the district voter numbers around 300 and 360. The Commissioners approved the new div ision. The of the Ephraim was more voting districts complicated. After counting voters and working with new boundaries that would not unseat anyone currently on the school board, Mrs. Anderson showed the proposed division to Paul Gottfredson, Business Administrator for the South Sanpete School District for his opinion before she presented it to the 1 1 Professor Bob Wright holds his Educator of the Year Trophy. The old division was everyone West of Main Street as one v oting district, and a line from about the middle of Main Street running East to div ide the East side of town into two other districts. The new proposal divides Ephraim into four voting districts, vv ith East-Wedividing lines at 200 North, Center Street, and 200 South. Commissioner Bob Bessey requested that a map of Ephraim with the new divisions be made for each of the Commissioners. A motion was made, seconded, and approved to draw up an ordinance for the new voting districts. The next order of business was a decision on the Courtroom remodeling project. Commissioner Bessey expressed his irritation at the unexpected increase from the original bid. The other Commissioners concurred, but the ultimate question was, What are we going to do now? It was decided that the project needed st to go ahead with the stipulation that the remodeling cost be put in writing and signed by all concerned parties in order to lock in the figures. Also, since the Court hired the architect initially, they need to be responsible for the architects fee. 1 he last requirement before remodeling begins is that no further changes in the plans arc to be made without a Change Order going through the County first. The last item addressed was the recommendation of an appointee to the Governors Commission on Women and Children. Further research since the last meeting discovered that the program has been around for a longtime, it just has not had a representative in Sanpete County. Their function is to help fund programs that benefit Women and Children, such as a computer for the Crisis Center in Richfield. The Commissioners decided to think about possible nominees and discuss it further at their next meeting. Edged out by Millard Manti High School Templarettes cop second place honors at State After taking first place in military, first in dance, and fourth in prop competition, Mantis Templarettes won second place in state drill team competition last Saturday. Millard High School won by 1 2 ranking point. Millard won first in prop, second in novelty and tied for second in dance. Juab, the third placed school won second place in military, tied for second in dance and third in novelty. Laurie Canales, Templarette coach, stated that the fourth place ranking in prop really hurt them. Like different events in gymnastics, having top scores in two events and a low si ore in the third will displace an otherwise championship team. Through a misunderstanding of how drill team competition is scored, this paper reported a regional victory via tie in ranking points with Juab. This paper received one irate call from a Juab fan who stated that Juab beat Mantis drill team by eight points. The facts of the actual results did mean a tie for first with Juab by ranking points. I lowever, to break a tie, a tally of total points is then evaluated to place one team as first. While Juab did win first by total points, the margin was only by 12 point in dance and 1 12 points in mili tary, totalling two, not eight points. Many Juab parents took this misunderstanding personally, and called Ms. Canales to complain. This carried over to the Juab girls prior to the competition, vv ho didnt want to get over the slight, in spite of apologies expressed by Mantis girls and leaders. Manti then focused on the challenge before them to show that they were worthy of a first place acknowledgement. While they expressed disappointment at missing first place by only 12 point, they are pleased with their performance, and are looking forward to next years - |
