Gas was found seeping through the floor by her water heater. Colby also said she could smell gas leaking t hrough the seams of her floor. Battalion Chief John Ungricht of the Magna Fire Department said an old and deteriorated gas line from the self service station broke, leaking gas into the soil. up to let the gas dissipate through the ground. Efforts by the Magna Fire Department have been made to dig down through the soil to water level in order for the gas to dissipate. The west side of the self service station has been dug up in different areas. Ungricht said its necessary to dig down to water level in order for the water to absorb the gas. The holes surrounding the station have been covered with chain links and boards and are also marked wit h barracades. The gas in Genevie Talbotts home was turned on Monday, March 1. So far, the gas in Letha Colbys home remains shut off. Some of the cracks in the floor of her home have been patched up to keep the fumes from leaking through, but Colby says she can still smell gas worse than ever.
