Show DESPICABLE. On Tuesday night last some scoundrel cut down three small poplar shade trees along the north side of Mayor Preston's lot, and one small locust near the north gate of Tabernacle square. Near the latter was another small locust almost cut in two by a blow from an axe. Such acts as these are simply deeds of wanton destruction of property, and if the offender could be detected he should be dealt with severely. The destruction of the Mayor's trees might be accounted for on the ground of private matter [?] on the part of the culprit, but why on earth any person should want to destroy the trees around Tabernacle Square, which are public property, is inexplicable. |
