Show The Murder Trial. From the Ogden Junciton, the Salt Lake Herald, and other sources we glean the following particulars of the Hicks' murder case: The shooting affair occurred at Sand Holes last May, in which it is reported that Charles E. Johnson was killed by a young man from Spanish Fork, Utah, by the name of Moroni Hicks. Young Hicks gave himself up at the time andf has been in jail at Malad all summer, awaiting the action of the grand jury. A bill on indictment was brought against Hicks and next day he was arraigned but did not plead until the 28th of November. The parents of young Hicks were at Malad to attend the trial of their son. They employed Judge Williams of Ogden, on the defense. The friends of young H. felt conficent of making a self defense case of it, notwithstanding the great prejudice against him. He was closely guarded after his indictment, not even his parents being allowed to go into the jail. The young man's mother was griefstricken and thought it very severe on the part of the officers in being too strict. It is said that the parents of Hicks are poor and it will doubtless ruin them before they get through with the trial. A verdict of guilty of murder in the second degree was brought in by the jury; and afterward a motion was made by Judge Wlliams, of the defence, for a new trail [trial]. |
