Show NEWS OF THE WORLD.

A band of armed men rode up to the house of a man named McLauren, living in the little town of ??, Texas, last Tuesday, and deliberately murdered McLauren, his wife, and a young man living with them, named Losse. No cause is given for the horrible act, and the perpetrators of it are unknown. Plunder evidently was not the object, as nothing in the house was disturbed.

NEW YORK, Apr. 6?. A Tribune reporter interviewed Dr. F. U. Otis, of thirty-fourth street, yesterday, who said three cases of cholera have recently come under his knowledge there. They are in Fifty-seventh, Thirty-seventh and Sixty-seventh streets. It is very unusual to find cases of this nature at this time of the year. He has treated several cases of Cholerine during the winter. These are the signs which have preceded all the epidemics at New York. Nobody wants to be pointed our as an alarmist, of course, but it looks to me as we should have trouble when the hot weather comes.

THE Herald: We have it on the authority of the eminent physicians of the city, and their opinion is sustained by the whole profession, that New York is now on the verge of a pestilence: that in fact premonitory symptoms of plague have already appeared.

CHICAGO, April 30.-Inter-Ocean's Washington: It is announced in a letter from Utah, dated 11th, that up to that time Cannon had not taken any testimony, so far as known, in the contested election case. It is believed he intends to try and go through on the prima facie case based on the count of votes, which is not questioned. He will be met by charges that he is not an American citizen and a flagrant violation of the law, which debars him from a seat in congress. It is believed the contest will open up the whole Mormon question, and lead at last to remedial measures.

It is reported that the Mormon influence is determined against Governor Neil and no effort will be spared to accomplish his removal. He has made a strong fight to head off the encroachments of these barbarians upon his territory, and he has been marked for deposition in any way that will remove him, as an obstacle to their wishes. The Mormons, it is believed, will be made to appreciate that opposition to their degrading influences will be no objection to a territorial governor in the opinion of General Garfield.

PUEBLO, Col., Apr. 23.-This afternoon, a passenger coach, containing 14 passengers on the Denver and Rio Grande train, which left here for ??, last Wednesday afternoon, jumped the track two miles east of Rock tunnel and rolled 131 feet down an embankment. No other cars left the track. Five men and one woman were killed outright and three seriously injured. No employees of the road were injured, except the fireman, who was riding in the coach. It is impossible to give a list of the killed at this writing.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., April 22.-Rev. Robert Mattlock was lynched in Isard county, a few days since, as is supposed. He was the preacher of the New Light fanaticism, which prevailed in this region last year. The enthusiastic believers in blood atonement, under Mattlock's lead, killed six or seven men. They murdered the Miller brothers, last August, with a knife, but were captured, tried and acquited [acquitted] as insane. A short time ago, a murdered man was found in the mountains between Toledo and Battesville, and circumstances indicate strongly to Mattlock as the murderer. The community was greatly excited, and Mattlock's disappearance makes it quite certain he is also the victim of blood-atonement.

CONSTANTINOPLE, Apr. 20-Poor persons, formerly domestic servants in the Imperial Palace, have been arrested, charged with the assassination of the late sultan, Abdul Aziz. They have confessed that they suffocated him, after which they opened veins in his arms to make it appear that he committed suicide. Two ex-palace officials and an ex-war minister are also stated to have been implicated. |
