Show A RAILROAD ACCIDENT. An accident occurred near Mendon the other day which might have resulted far more disastrously than it did. It happened that as a train was coming this way, two ladies were driving a team towards the track. They had bonnets which projected so far forward that they did not see the approaching train and boldly started across the track. The engineer rang the bell and blew the whistle in time to prevent the accident, but the ladies did not hear or heed the alarm and the locomotive struck one of the horses breaking several ribs and otherwise injuring it, and knocked the other from the track. Our informant says no blame can be attached to the engineer, as the approaching train could be seen at a great distance by the ladies if they had looked along the road. We are glad the accident was not more serious and hope others will look for a coming train before crossing the track. |
