Show SERIOUS ACCIDENT. Editor Leader -- On Thursday afternoon a very painful accident occurred to the son of James H. Hill, of this place. The young man, in company with a companion, was out duck hunting; and, a flock of ducks rising from behind them, James Hill turned rapidly to fire. His companion turned also, but through his hands being benumbed with cold or the excitement of the moment, the gun was discharged, the whole charge passing through the left leg of young Hill about four inches above the ankle joint, tearing away about two inches of ???? bones in the leg, making a frightful wound.

The accident happened about one o'clock and it was four o'clock before they got to town. Doctor Ormsby of Logan, was sent for, arriving here about 8:30 p.m. The doctor immediately examined the wound and declared it impossible to save the leg. The family being very anxious to preserve the limb implored him to save the leg if in his power to do so. To convince them the doctor in the presence of the family and others, pressed his fingers through the wound showing that the bone was completely blown to pieces over two inches being gone entirely, there being nothing left to hold the leg to the body only the skin and portions of the muscle. The family then consented to have the leg amputated, which was performed by Doctor Ormsby in a manner which proved him to be a surgeon of undoubted skill and ability. The operation having been completed in ?? minutes from the time the doctor commenced with his patient. The family, and all present, felt satisfied that a skillful operation had been performed. The boy is doing well and it is hoped will soon be able to be up again. This is another warning to parents to be careful in allowing their children to use fire arms without instructing them how to use them. So ???? Mendon, Nov. 17, 1879. |
