Show SUGGESTIONS TO SCHOOL TRUSTEES. A school official has requested us to offer one or two suggestions to school trustees, upon the subject of suitable outbuildings near schoolhouses. This certainly is a subject that should receive the attention of trustees. Few school furnishings or accommodations are as essential to the comfort, conveniance [convenience], and, above all, the health of pupils, as are suitable water closets connected with school buildings. The trustees of the several wards of Logan have taken commendable action in respect to this matter, and every school house in the city, so we are informed, is being provided with suitable outhouse. We are informed, however, that in many of the school districts of this county, this important matter is being entirely ignored by school officials. This we can but regard as a serious dereliction of duty, on the part of those who have the management of school buildings and schools funds, and we protest against it, on behalf of the pupils of such schools, whose health and sensitive feelings can but suffer very much from lack of an accommodation demanded alike by hygiene and decency. In the erection of water closets for the accomodation [accommodation] of schools, such a plan of construction should be adopted as will most completely prevent unwholesome emanations, and the preservation of a due delicacy among the pupils, demands that there should be separate accommodations for the sexes. The days of our primitive habits and customs in relation to schools, as well as other matters, are fast passing away, and that school district which falls to adopt the improvements spoken of, and which are absolutely demanded by our present civilization, should be classed a being away behind the times in matters of hygiene, convenience and health. |
