Show LECTURE BUREAU. Our suggestions, in last week's Leader, respecting the organization of a Lecture Bureau in this city, have attracted some attention, and the project, we are pleased to state, seems to meet with general approbation. It seems to us that the establishment and conduct of such an organization, comes within the legitimate scope and province of the Y. M. M. I. A. [Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association]. It appears to us that it would be highly proper for the officers and members of that body to take the matter in hand, and to select, from among themselves, a sufficient number of young men, possessing the requisite qualifications, and to organize those young men in such a manner as would enable them to act efficiently in arranging for lectures, to be delivered in this city or in the various towns of this Stake. We think a Lecture Bureau should be organized and conducted under the auspices of the Y. M. M. M. I. A., as its labors would come directly within their appropriate sphere; while, if established as a separate institution, we fear there might be some occasion for a conflict of interest at times. To have a Lecture Bureau added to the present organization of the Y. M. M. I. A., would, we think, have a marked tendency to strengthen it, to increase the interest in its work, and to enhance its usefulness as a means of instruction and enlightenment among all classes of the community. By way of agitating what we believe would be an excellent project if carried out, we take the liberty of making a few further suggestions. Suppose the Bureau to consist, say of a president or manager, a secretary and treasurer, combined in one person, and three directors, making a body of five in all, large enough to divide the labors, yet small enough to act efficiently, and with dispatch. Thus organized, the Bureau could act under the general supervision of the presidency of the Y. M. M. I. A. of the Stake, and could, through its secretary, attend to the necessary correspondence with lecturers and speakers, while the duty of its directors would be to arrange for lectures, single or in courses, to attend to the making of appointments, raising of funds for current expenses, &c. These are but crude suggestions for general organization and [line missing/unreadable] There is, in this county, a ?? field of useful [line missing/unreadable] organization that will make [line unreadable] arrangements for the delivery of lectures to the people, and a general desire for something of the kind, that will afford profitable recreation and amusement for the young and, at least in part, supersede excessive dancing and other amusements that consume time without imparting profit. |
