Show Mis THE HERALD-JOURNA- L, LOGAN, UTAH, MONDAY, NOVEMIiEl! 2. PAGE THJtEE 1231. 3 ! i j j I How can the Mayor ask us to trust and support him when he is so ready to attack other public officials and other citizens? Have you observed the Mayors attitude toward honest and honorable citizens of Logan when they offer suggestions about our city? Does he say, Gentlemen, I am delighted with the interest you display in our good city? Does he say, I am glad that we are all working for the best interests of our ten thousand citizens? Not at all. Instead he interprets all suggestions that do not come from his own circle as attacks on him and his rule, and shouts hireling, disloyal, traitor to those who would help, or those who would even dare to be interested. When the Mayor is so ready to distrust everyone else, how can he ask us to trust him? Jt- ' Logan can develop as it should only under the leadership of those who can inspire confidence and unity of effort based on that fundamental principle of democracy which assumes that by and large we are all interested in the common good. Observe also that the Mayor appeals for the vote of the COMMON PEOPLE (perhaps he can tell us who are the citizens of Logan who are uncommon peor pie). We maintain that in this city that appeal is cheap and maudeline. It is an attempt to create class distinction in our city and to make it appear that he is the friend of the great mass of us; and that we have on our side just a few plutocrats and citizens who think themselves above the common people when as a matter of fact we have with us more than 75 per cent of the business men and ecclesiastical leaders, men and women from every vocation and profession, men and women whose honesty and integrity have not been questioned until they dared to disagree with the Mayor. In view of the fact that they could not answer our arguments they had but one thing left, namely: resort to inuendoes. They intimate that we have received financial support from outside when as a matter of fact all our funds (which by the way are not very much) were collected (volunteered if you please) from the citizens of Ixgan in small amounts and not one cent from any corporation or any person or firm that would benefit financially or personally by the success of our organization, except that we would make Logan In the City Attorneys reply he questions the professional ethics and friendship of the chairman. But he does not dispute the fact that the city attorney received nearly 810,000.00 for his services to the city for a five year .period, and at the same time conducted his private practice. He also fails to explain just why. when the law provides that alf city expenditures shall be budgeted, that these special fees have never appeared in any budget prepared by the present administration and were not known to more than a dozen people in Logan until we published them. It will be observed a Certain of their workers promised men that they would be taken care of if they would vote for the Mayors party and resorted to all kinds of base statements about our candidates and supporters. They accused us of g (when we have only given them facts, their own record, that they could not and did not answer the truth is never mud forgetting that they accused us of being disloyal, enemies, questioned the right of that not Four Square party disputed the facts that we have published. WHY? FOR THE VERY SIMPLE REASON THAT THEY ARE FACTS AND THERE IS NO ANSWER TO THEM. WE HIRED AN AUDITOR FOR ABOUT TWO WEEKS AND HE VERIFIED ALL THE DATA THAT WE PUBLISHED AND HE CHECKED AND DOUBLE CHECKED ALL FIGURES FROM THE CITY RECORD THEMSELVES. It is therefore clear that we proved our case from the records made by the mud-slingin- certain ones to speak, and - They state that until recently the law permitted but a two mill levy for streets and parks and that it costs $12,000.00 to light the streets which left only $1000.00 for repairs and maintenance of streets, sidewalks and parks. Here are the facts: Receipts from tax levy from 1926 to 1931 (1931 estimated) $95,504.00; transferred from the street department to the light department in six years $64,999.96, leaving a balance available for streets of $41,443.26. Thus there has been an average of nearly $7,000.00 per year for street purposes instead of as they say. $1,-000.- 00 Furthermore, they fail to state that the $12,000.00 per year which they say it costs to light the streets, WAS i COULD NOT BE SOLD WITH- OUT A VOTE OF THE PEOPLE. But in order to put this question at rest NEVER INCLUDED IN THE STREET BUDGET UNTIL 1931, BUT HAS BEEN BUDGETED WITH THE GENERAL ACCOUNT. Why, therefore now charge it up to streets? We have never criticised the administration because sufficient funds have not been spent on the streets. Our criticism has been that the funds were not judiciously spent, that the roads have not been maintained, that there has not been a just and equitable distribution of road benefits and in particular our tow greatest attractions Logan Temple and the College have been neglected.' But why waste time arguing over the roads they speak for themselves. quist signed their statement under oath to the effect that they now are and always have been staunch supporters of the light plant and that if elected that they would not do nor consent to the doing of any single act or thing in the least detrimental to the Light Plant. And that they will do all in their power to protect and promote the interests of the City Light Plant. Knowing as the Four Square party does that no one can, for a moment, question the honesty and integrity of either Mr. Evans or Mr. Lindquist, they have now ceased this kind of false propaganda, for the purpose of get- They then state that the capital assets which have been added to the citys investments during the past six years have been $419,959.78, and then they say deducting the $9,000.00 increase in the citys indebtedness leaves S410.959.7S. Again they are misleading by stating the citys increase in indebtedness is only $9,000.00. They fail to tell you that they used the sinking fund in the sum of $17,270.52 and that the floating in . The total increased indebtedness is more than $100,000.00. It will also be observed that they have taken credit for the increase in capital assets, but have made no allowance for depreciation. We have consulted a competent auditor and he advised us that a fair depreciation figure for the six years period would be $220,000.00, so that the net increase would be less than provided we had no increase in indebtedness. It is apparent if we used the Loyal Partys system of figuring (that is taking credit for all the invest- ments and making no allowance for depreciation) that it would only be a matter of a very few years until Logan Citys assets would be greater than those of Salt Lake.
