Show Wednesday, July 28, 1999 - Page 12 Lehi Free Press New Utah! - Evans Depot continued from front page when the railroad was completed into Payson. As a terminal for the railroad, businesses thrived on State Street and was a "bustle of activity." VanWagoner gives a vignette of the activity that was there as he relates a story of President Brigham Young and his arrival in town by train. It is a simple recollection of Young after greeting the townsfolk, stepping down from the depot to personally tend to and inspect his horses in order to make sure everything is ready for the next leg of the journey. Jerry and Annette Harris purchased the building in the 1970's. "We bid on it when it came up for auction. Jerry is an antique dealer and has a sixth sense, we wanted to help preserve it, we would later find out that it is the oldest train depot west of the Mississippi," said Annette. The Historical Commission was able to purchase it from them in the 1990s and the city was able to receive grants and donations to help with the moving and the restoration of the old building. They have received money from the George and Dore Eccles Delores Foundation, First Security Bank, Zions Bank, and Orville Gunther through the Bank of American Fork. The Utah County Commission and Lehi City Corporation will be contributing to the restorations of the old structure. The Eastman Park will be a little over one acre in a long pie shape facing State Street next to J & J Small Engine Repair at about 225 East. The edifice will stand on footings similar to those that originally held it over 125 years ago with eight by eight treated lumber piers and braces tied to the building. On a tour of the old structure, Rockwell and VanWagoner point out features of the depot. The original insulators for the telegraph lines are still in the rafters as they were placed by Deseret the Telegraph Company. Rockwell points out the old ticket window, the luggage door, the station master's home upstairs, and the fireplace and chimney sites. After restoration, the downstairs will have photos, displays, and artifacts for the public to see. Upstairs they speculate that the city will be able to use the area for offices. The building still has some of the original molding and Waynes coating that was used. They will use lath and plaster instead of during the restoration. And as part of the renovation. wall-boar- d "' At . . v.-.- 1' .. I ,. .... .s 'Hi!' At least that is their intent, but unless parents cooperate or at the very least plan ahead and notify the school, it can make staffing the school difficult. "How many we have registered determines how many teachers we can hire," said Dunn. 'The best thing that parents can do for their kids is to register them or if they will be moving here, to let us know now."
