Suddenly one of them is knocked down as he is hit from his blind side. Upon him, all eyes anticipate the worst. He does not get up. This is a familiar scene in football and similar ones take place in other contact sports. Injuries are a common occurrence in sports and one of the hazards most people are aware of before they become involved. Yet most Americans seem to thrive on that element of risk as they strive for the level of physical fitness that puts them on top and hopefully untouchable by the hands of fate. Among the most common injuries sustained in sports activities are contusions, bruises and strains. Contusions and bruises are superficial injuries to the surface of the body which do not break the skin. They are usually caused by impact with hard or sharp sur- - faces, by falls or by blows such as a football player could expect from a tackle. Bruises cause a discoloration of the skin which changes as k they heal from a appearance to brown and then yellow. This is due to the damage to the small blood vessels in the tissues beneath the skin, or sometimes to infiltration of blood into the muscles and is called a hematoma. The color change occurs from the time the blood clot forms under the skin until all the pigment material is blue-blac- absorbed. Some people whose blood vessels are more fragile or permeable may bruise more easily than others. For instance, some women may bruise more easily during their menstrual cycle. Obese and anemic persons are also more susceptible. While most bruises heal without attention, cold applications or hot compresses may give relief if there is any swelling or pain from the bruise. It is not The Cellulose Blues advisable to massage the area. For severe bruises the injured part should be rested and if there is much swelling in an arm or leg the limb may be elevated to ease the absorption of blood. Heat may also bring relief in this instance. Strains are often confused with sprains and are another common sports injury. Strains are injuries to muscles that are caused by overexertion. The muscle fibers are stretched and even sometimes partially tom. Intense pain may be the only sign of a strain in most cases. The best cure of a strain is rest. Heat may be applied with a hot water bottle, heating pad or lamp. Gentle massage with warm rubbing alcohol or witch hazel may ease the pain, and if so, a more forceful rubbing or kneading of the stricken area may help loosen stiffened muscles. Runners may also experience shin splints or stress fractures of the tibia and fibula, the two bones in the lower leg that support body weight. This is gener ally caused by running on hard surfaces or pushing the body to extreme exertion, more than it is capable of adjusting to. d Severe injuries generally involve the knees, ankles and shoulders. Damage to tendons, ligaments and cartilage, as well as fractures can be extremely painful and most often must be surgically repaired. Tendons are cords of strong fibrous tissue that attach the muscles to bones and are vital to movement. Ligaments are bands of tough, flexible connective tissue that join the articular surfaces of bones. Cartilage is another type of connective tissue which is relatively strong and has a very smooth surface. Since it is a compressible tissue it serves to cushion jolts and bumps to the skeletal system. sports-relate- A tear in one of the knee cartilages may occur during contact sports such as football or wrestling. It happens when a twisting force pushes through a bent or half bent knee. There is usually pain in the joint when the tear occurs and the person cannot noted at the time of the injury. CHERYL ARCHIBALD Review Start Spot reducing has not been dis- cussed as much lately in these times of aerobics and weight lifting. But the problem of accumulated fat on hips, stomach or thighs is as common as ever and people with bulges are still trying to get rid of them. Can lumps of fat really be rolled, melted, pushed or shoved away? When seeking the answer, it would be wise to find out whether the expert will be making any money for his rec- ommendations. Entrepreneurs have become rich providing miracle solutions to the problem of bulges in the wrong places. One should understand the nature of fat deposits, sometimes called cellulose when in a bump-ic- f state In his book, Arnolds Body Shaping for Women, Arnold Schwarzenegger says all fat goes through the liver. Some is used for maintaining normal body functions, and the excess is stored, especially in neglected areas where muscles have been unused for years. It collects in unsightly sagging pockets along thighs and backs of arms or on the stomach. Stored fat and lumpy cellulite mean two things. The person is out of shape and is probably overweight. The solution is to take in enough protein and nutrients to rebuild muscle tissue, while exercising to strengthen and tone the unused muscle. It is possible, Schwarzenneger says, to reshape certain parts of the body. If you need more mass on your thighs because inthey are too thin, you can crease them. If you want to decrease your hips, your buttocks, or your waist, you can do that with proper diet and some elementary exercises." But he gives two requirements to be successful at it. Know what you want and be willing to expend the effort to achieve it. He tells women, however.that in most instances bust size cannot be changed. Exercise can improve looks and make the bust appear larger by expanding the rib cage and by developing , firming and building pectoral muscles. To expand the rib cage, he recommends a person lay on his back while lifting weights over his head. Chair and counter are good for building push-up- s pectoral muscles. A different view on spot reducing is held by Charles Kuntzle-ma- n in his book, Rating The Exercises. Kuntzleman refers to it as physiological hogwash. When energy is needed by the body, as in exercise, it is released from all over. Exercise triggers the release of fat cells from all over the body, and the circulatory system turns it into energy to be Used by the muscles. Stationary exercise, however, does firm up specific areas where muscles are weak. For example, if the abdominal muscles are weak, bent knee will curl ups, and strengthen these muscles and flatten the abdomen. But, they will not remove fat. The book rates two types of exercise equipment: passive, where the person lets the equipment do all the work, and active, where the person expends energy to work the equipment. Do not be misled by health club claims that their machine is says unique or Passive exercise Kuntzleman. equipment cannot help you become fit, nor will it roll off the fat. The best advice on passive exercise is simple: If you dont have to work on the machine, forget it." sit-up- doctor-approve- i d, s, rVlnonoof75fltno momborshlpo.
