Show I Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, April 25, 1984 Love Being Your Eyes and Ears Riesen Likes to Give information CHERYL ARCHIBALD Review Staff BOUNTIFUL Phil Riesen, KTVX anchorman, told members of the Bountiful Chamber of Commerce last week, that although his job may seem glamorous to some that is not why he does it. He said he is dedicated to informing people. I love being your eyes and ears. He believes that people need to know what is going on. However, he told chamber members that to be really informed people should read the newspapers. Admitting that he was talking refuge for the non journalistic airhead. They spend too much time trying to entertain, and Riesen named that as the primary reason he left the station in 1979. The reason I came back is a change in that attitude, he against his own media, he said he reads the whole paper every morning and on Sundays. His whole family does, he said. I insist on it. Most people get their news from TV and in my mind thats too bad. He explained that news for television has to be trimmed most of the time to fit a one and a half minute spot, and that its a difficult task." As managing editor at KTVX, Channel 4 since 1983, Riesen has set his goal to keep people informed. Its my opinion that for too long TV news has been a said. - Riesen was KALL radio news director and air personality between his times at KTVX. His approach to TV news is to give fewer smiley, cutesy remarks as they pass the baton back and forth. And even though Channel 4 has the lowest ratings and has for a long time, Riesen said those ratings are on a gradual and steady rise. The other stations ratings jog up and down. Riesen believes that his approach to news, which is only a year and half old, will eventually pick up more viewers than the prevailing news programs. Riesen commented on his recent interview with convicted murderer Arthur Gary Bishop when he scooped the other news stations. I know everyone thinks I paid someone, he said. But Riesen got the interview by walking out of the courtroom the day of the sentencing with Bishops lawyer, Jo Carol and by simply asking her for the interview. He told her that he didnt even want to talk to Bishop about the mur--' ders, but that he wanted to get inside his head. Riesen came under much cri- ticism for doing the interview. Many questioned how he could even dare interview that scum. But Riesen said all through the trial he was sickened like every Nes-set-Sa- news personality, told the Bountiful Chamber of Commerce, that TV news should not be the only source of news for people. PHIL RIESEN, TV one else. He wanted to reach just one person sitting home, who may have recognized the same tendencies in himself. If I prevented one Arthur Bishop by getting someone to say I better get some help then I'll take all the criticism anyone wants to give."
