Established in October 1982, the Utah branch of the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program is based in Ogden. The idea isnt to give veterans a hand-ou- t. All they need is an opportunity. Even if they cant offer a chance at employment, I ask if they would volunteer to work with our program. Sometimes we pair the businessman with an unemployed vet. He can give him advolun-teeris- vice and maybe provide connections with other employers. Since the Ogden center opened, over 80 people have become volunteers. A board of directors headed by former Weber County Commissioner Frank Maugham, assists the staff in recruiting volunteers. Galbraith said the recession is the key to many of the veterans problems. The new state law mandates an automatic jail sentence or public service work for people convicted of drunk driving. ' Two offenders have completed their community service sen- tence and one is currently serving his sentence, Johnson said the Davis County program is modeled after one in use in Syracuse, N.Y., which successfully operates on the community service program for offenders. Splashing across the wall in vivid red, white and blue, it presents a welcome contrast to the flag burnings which greeted some returning Vietnam veterans. We want to let the men and women who come here know they are appreciated. These centers are a way to show them the country stands behind them and wants to make-u- p for disadvancaused their wartime tages by experience, said Galbraith.
