Show t i 8A Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, Aug. 17, 1983 Workshop Dated On Solar Water Heating Method Save money on your hot water heating costs by letting the r ii sun heat water for you, says Dr. Wayne B. Ringer, extension energy specialist, Utah State University. The specialist will offer a free orientation class on how a domestic solar hot water system works and the savings it can afford. The class will be held on Thursday. Aug. 25, starting at 8 p.m. in the Davis County sheriffs annex building auditorium, 50 East State Street, Farmington. Dr. Ringer will offer a subsequent builders workshop with the schedule to be announced at the class. At that workshop, homeowners will be supplied kits of materials at cost and will be instructed in building their own solar collectors. Dr. Ringer has one of these solar domestic hot water systems in his own home. It is one of more than 300 built during extension workshops held over the state and installed by the homeowners within a two-yeperi- Those who have previously expressed interest in registering for the builders workshop are especially encouraged to attend the orientation class. solar hot water systems built in previous workshops have performed surprisingly well from Preston, Idaho to St. George, he said. This is in spite of unusual weather patterns with more cloud cover and rainfall that have prevailed over the state during the last 20 months, according to Dr. Ringer. Solar units built by homeowners in the workshops sponsored by USU Extension and the Utah Energy Office are providing from 50 to 75 percent of the energy needed for consumable hot ! water. That means a considerable savings to each homeowner. The amount of savings to the family depends on the cost of fuel available for heating water, the location in the state, how well the system is balanced to the amount of hot water the family uses, and other variables. Bcsk-- 'i TotSqIj'i ar od. The system with four solar collectors Ringer built for his own home has been in use for nearly a year. Though located in Cache Valley in Northern Utah, it has performed very well. . The freeze protection designed into the system proved adequate during low air temperatures last winter. Throughout the spring and summer, harvesting the suns energy in the form of hot water was both profitable and exciting. During a seven-da- y our period in gas water heater turned on just twice for a few minutes as the water tank temperature dropped below 125 degrees, Ringer said. He attributed that to rain and cloud cover. Other days, the solar system generously provided all the hot water used by the your Favorite Brando and Stylo At Low family. Prices! New design innovations have become available since previous workshops. A more efficient black chrome selective coating copper absorber plate can substantially reduce radiation losses from the solar collector absorber plate. Also, largeer collectors may be built and solar collecting systems can be used for heating spas and hot tubs. These and other will be discussed in the orientation class on August devel-opemen- ts 25.
