Show Pofl IOC, Lakeside Review, Moy 6, 1981 Cot Be Heoiltlliiy, Gireemi Lfsiwins -- ' A good lawn is both attractive and useful. It keeps the soil from washing and blowing, helps to keep mud and dust out of the house, and reduces glare .and heat. Under most conditions in Utah, a , healthy, attractive lawn can be 'established and maintained with care. and .reasonable effort Irrigate heavily and less frequently. A lawn requires about two inches of ; water per week during the summer. ' The amount applied can be determined easily by placing small, straight-side- d cans such as tuna fish cans on the lawn being sprinkled and then measuring the depth of water collected. The soil should be wet to a depth of one to two feet with each watering except on shallow soils. Water only often enough to keep the lawn from burning about every five to tens days, depending on the weather and how much water the soil will hold. Light sprinkling every day wastes time and favors weed growth. The best times of day to irrigate are early morning or before late afternoon. Watering in the middle of the day will not scald or injure the grass. Where water is available from an irrigation ditch, flooding is good if a small amount of water is applied evenly. T Set the mower to leave Kentucky of . bluegrass with at least Vk inches growth. Short cutting punishes the ! lawn and encourages the weeds. ' Some of the newer grasses may be cut shorter. Keep the mower sharp and clip fairly often. A general statement for grass clippings if the turf is thick and it is fertilized often, remove most of the clippings. If the turf is thin and not much fer-- ; tilizer is used, do not catch the clippings if mowed often. If the clippings are ieft on the lawn, they will soon settle around the crowns of the plants to serve as a mulch. This organic matter makes lawn soil more fertile, moderates high and low temperatures, and helps to hold water. The time between cuttings will depend upon the season and soil fertility. It should be often enough that clippings will not be unsightly or Smother the grass when left on the turf. ' Continue clipping in the fall as long as the grass is growing. Excess grass during the winter may smother the lawn and is a cover insects and fungi. Use enough fertilizer to keep the lawn growing thrifty; but avoid using too much, since this may result in the need for mowing too often. - Where soil fertility is low, nitrogen -- stimulates grass and phosphate stimulates clover. Thus, the composition of a clover and grass lawn can be controlled largely by the fertilizer applied. If only grass is wanted, nitrogen is usually the only fertilizer needed. For grass and clover, use both nitrogen and phosphate. Phosphate is needed only once every three to four years. Planting a New Lawn A few homeowners are fortunate enough to have complete supervision and control of the home grounds before any excavation is done. Where this is the case, taking a few precautions will make it easier to start a lawn. First, pile the topsoil to itself while digging the basement or foundation. After the house construction is finished, remove all building debris from the lot such as plaster, pieces of wood and brick. Then fill in around the foundation with subsoil material. Start the lawn foundation by establishing the slope and grade. To provide for surface drainage, a gentle r I ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o o o o slope away from the house is desirable. It should have no dips or ridges. Make cuts and fills as necessary and settle all fills by thoroughly saturating with water to the depth of the fill. This is especially important near the house foundation and over sewer and water lines. After the fill settles, raise up to the grade with more soil. This process of filling and settling should be continued until a firm foundation at the desired grade is Next soak the entire established. lawn area to a depth of about two feet. Allow for five or six inches of topsoil if it is to be brought in. The final ground level should be some distance below basement windows or other openings and one to two inches below walks and drives. After the turf is established, the surface of the lawn will appear to be about even with walks and drives. Many gallons of water and hours of time can be saved by installing a properly designed permanent lawn sprinkling system. The best time for installation is before planting the lawn. It consists of a series of pipes and valves. The cost is usually not excessive. Most sprinkling system dealers offer free planning services with no obligation on your part. Proper pipe size, number and location of valves, and number, size, kind, and location of sprinkler heads are important for an economically designed system. Help should be obtained from a dealer, or someone who is well trained in hydraulics and has had experience with lawn sprinklers, before the system is installed. If the topsoil was saved during excavating, spread it evenly over the lot. If not, haul in topsoil or improve the soil that is there. It is best to haul in soil on sites where the present soils are stony or gravelly, coarse sand or heavy clay, or where the soils consist largely of heavy subsoil materials, particularly those high in lime. Often the original topsoil is as good or better than soil brought in. The original soil may be improved by adding organic material such as peat moss and manure. A good topsoil is loamy, well supplied with organic matter, and free of weed seeds. If the soil on the lot is heavy clay, hauling in some sandy soil will improve it. Bring in enough to cover the area aboput four inches deep and mix in well with the upper two inches of clay. Where the soil is to sandy, hauling in clay soil will improve the waterholding capacity and the lawn will require watering less often. Bring in enough clay to cover the area about two inches deep and mix in well with the upper four inches of sand. Most soils can be improved by mixing d in organic matter such as peat , well-rotte- manure, or compost and commercial fertilizer such as The topsoil should be spread as evenly as possible and smoothed out to the grade desired. Prepare a smooth, fine, firm seedbed by raking and rolling it several times. Settle the soil by a heavy sprinkling; then when it is nearly dry, rake over it again, filling in the uneven places. Spread fertilizer at this rate: V2 pound triple superphosphate, or its equivalent; plus lk pound ammonium nitrate; or pound ammonium sulfate, or equivalent, per 100 square feet of lawn area. If a heavy mulch of fine sawdust is to be applied later, double the amount of nitrogen fertilizer. Sprinkle again and allow to settle. When the surface is dry enough to walk on without shoes getting muddy, it is ready to plant. There are a number of sod farms in Utah producing this as a Steel Deck Model No. cash crop. Sod can be picked up at the farm or .obtained through your local nurseryman and laid by ypurself or by professionals. Large orders can be delivered. In establishing a lawn with sod, follow the same initial procedure as for a seeded lawn; preparing the lawn foundation and the seedbed. Lay the sod, being careful to place the strips evenly and close together so there are no gaps. Then roll to make a firm contact of the new sod with the soil below and sprinkle immediately. Water frequently for the first few weeks. By then the grass roots will extend into the soil below the lawn and can be managed the same as an established lawn. It is important to lay the sod and get it watered as soon as possible after being cut at the sod farm. This is most critical in hot dry weather. Suggestion Award HILL AFB Gary W.
