Show Lakeside Review, May 6, 1981, Page Mu Foil Nevada Boys Dominate Meet By Bliss Fullmer Staff Writer Let's hear it for B.Y.U.U They really put on a track extravaganza in their annual invitational Athletes from high school track meet. several states in the intermountain area came to compete, but the battle for first place involved two teams from Nevada. Wooster High School of Reno barely edged Clark High School of Las Vegas in a 61 - 60 duel. Utahs Hillcrest High School finished a distant third with 38 points. Every year, records are broken, and 1981 was no exception. The teams were divided into two groups, with 1A and 2A schools competing together, and 3A and 4A in the same bracket. Individual records were posted for the four categories of teams. Two 1A records and three 2A records were broken during the day, and two records (1A and 2A) were shattered in the same race, in the 400 meter run. One 3A record (the pole vault - 149) was broken, by Malcom Hunsaker of Orem and Cottonwood's Troy Butters high jumped 6llMt to break the existing 4A record. The 400 meter relay team of Clark High School, Las Vegas, set a new meet record for that event in the lightning time of 42.46 seconds. The coveted decathalon trophy went to Keith Robinson of American Fork, who amassed 6694 points in the grueling two day contest. Decathalon contestants must show their wares in the 100 meter dash, the 110 meter hurdles, the 400 meter run, the 1500 meter run, the shot-pu- t, the discus, javelin, long jump, high jump and pole vault. The record for this event is held by Dave Powell of Olympus, who collected 7479 points in 1970. A lot of athletes from Northern Utah placed high in the track meet, but only Mark Carter, in the shot-pu- t, won any gold. Carter heaved the shot 58iy2 for first place. He holds the state record with a throw beyond 61 feet, set at the Weber State Invitational a few weeks ago. The track meet will serve as a tune-u- p for regional meets, held this week, all over Utah, and then next week, the teams will meet at Weber State for the 4A track meet. BYU4 A Track . Dave Edmondson moved all of his lifts up and totaled 1080, including a 402 squat, 237 bench press and 441 dead lift. He had to settle for third place in the 132 pound class ex- tremely stiff, but aspiring athletes displayed excellent efforts to nab points for local teams. Coach Pat Rawlings Lancers not only nabbed a few places but many tracksters recorded personal bests and even broke a few school records. Sophomore Suzy Orton nabbed a second place out of a photo finish in the 200 meters; Melba Tyson placed third in the 100 meter hurdles and also established a new school record. Lori Wood had a personal best that shattered the school record in the 800 meters; and the Layton medley team, consisting of Deann Kidd, Michelle Harrell, Mary Bataglia, and Lori Wood also snapped a school record. Athletes from Roy with excellent performances were Becky Sodenkamp who finished third in the discus event and Niki Nye who claimed fourth in the javelin. Tracy Fishburn was the only star for Clearfield, she leaped to a third place finish in the high jump. With the regular season behind them, local tracksters now focus on coveted regional medals and possible state participation. Truly, the past the most imweeks have been in preparation portant events of the track Season regional and state. Powerful Weber leads the 4A Region One field, and in the 3A, Region Four territory, a consistent and strong Davis squad eyes the top spot. Both regions start their competition on Thursday, May 7, and will continue through the 8th. Local athletes expected to shine in the grueling competition include Darlene Stockton of Davis who has consistently placed in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and lately, the 400 meters. Sue Duncanson, also of Davis should exhibit a credible performance in the javelin and the high jump. Inez Wozniak of Layton will definitely be in the top finishers in the discus event, but Boys Becky Sodekamp, barring any further troubles with her knee injury, is expected to claim the shot put title.
