Show Lakeside Review, April 1, 1981, Page .11 Layton's Archibald Places Fourth Strength Proves Winner at Mogul Championships. Skiing as an amateur, Snowbirds Stu OBrien proved his superiority in strength and stamina on a long, narrow mogul field In the Budweiser Utah Professional Mogul Skiing Cham pionships at Snowbasin, Utah today,. March 28. The field of 68 top skiers, was n names, but missing several did not detract from OBriens strength and solid air performance which gained him the Budweiser Cup Title at American Pro Skiings second 1981 stop. Stan Kolby, of Boise, Idaho, was second. Kolby was the winner two weeks ago at Lake Eldora, Colorado, and was the man to beat at Snowbasin. He bumped off former National Amateur Champion, Mark Archibald, of Layton, Utah, in a close semifinal match. well-know- OBrien had tough early round competition from Snowbirds Jerry Douglass (2nd on both 1979 and 1980 American Pro Skiing final point standings), and Brian Reynolds, but skied very well to top off his day with a brilliant final run. It might as well have been linked snowplow turns, because Kopter" Kolby, who knew he would have to do something extra to beat OBrien, attempted a rarity in mogul skiing competition these days because of the high risk; a helicopter. It would have won it for Kolby, but he landed slightly off, couldnt retain his line, and went off course, giving the title to OBrien. Kolbys portion of the $5,000 cash purse at the Budweiser Cup was $600. Reynolds finished third over Archibald, and took home $450 for his days work, with Archibald in fourth. Kolby remains APS point and money leader, with a total of 46 Grand Prix points and $1,600 cash won so far this season. OBrien, a fully certified P.S.I. A. Ski Instructor has also raced in several pro races in the past, as well as being a; member of the 1981 United States F.I.5. World Cup Freestyle Skiing Team, is by; far one of the most versatile skiers on; the APS Tour. His win at Snowbasin moves him into third place on the 1981 APS point list. An amateur competitor, OBrien turned down the $1,000 first, place check, a portion of which donated to the United States : Ski ' ? Association. Amateurism on again in the ladies division of the Budweiser Cup at Snowbasin, with Kay Kucera of Salt Lake City, taking the title. Kucera is a member of the U.S. F.I.S. Freestyle Skiing Team, an amateur, and mastered Snowbasins long and cruel Centennial run, to defeat Snowbasins own Bobbie Chambers in the final run for the title. Kucera also turned down her $400 check with a smile, while Chambers accepted her $200 second place winnings. In her final match against Kucera,'. Chambers went into the air as high as any of the mens competitors, with a' spectacular spread eagle maneuver at the start of the course. It was tough to land, and the resulting stumble gave to finish her run Kucera the for the title. Kucera moves into the lead for the APS Grand Prix Title. Jennifer Wilson, who won at Lake Eldora, took third at the Budweiser Utah Championships, to move into second place in the standings. The next stop on the American Pro Skiing 1981 Dual Mogul Skiing Tour, is at Powder Mountain, for the Budweiser Easter Utah Championships. go-ahe- Homeowners: Now you can cash-i-n on your home without selling it! home has undoubtedly increased in value since you bought it.
