Antelope Drive, Layton, had an experience recently while she was teaching first grade Burton at Kaysvilles Elementary School that most people never have m their entire life. She used the Heimlich Maneuver to save the life of one of her first grade students. THE BOY was using some of his free time to play with a Battlestar Galactica space ship hed brought to school. A small missile, discharged by the space ship, became lodged in the boys throat. He stumbled towards Miss choking, gagging and gasping for breath. Hams, MISS recalled HARRIS quickly the learning Heimlich Maneuver while she was a student at Weber State d the College. She boy from behind, pushing up bear-hugge- sharply beneath his rib cage with the fist shed made of one hand. The dart didnt fly out of the boys mouth as Miss Harris had hoped it would but- the boy started breathing again. - MISS HARRIS and Burtons school principal, E. Bowen Lewis couldnt reach the boys parents by phone because the family had just moved to Kaysville. Mr. Lewis rushed the child by car to his home. ' His parents explained later that the plastic dart had lodged in the airway leading to both lungs, halting the boys breathing. THE DOCTOR said that Miss Harris application of the Heimlich Maneuver dislodged the object enough to permit the boy to breath with one lung. If Miss Harris hadnt done what she did, the child could have died within five minutes, according to the doctor. - The physician removed the inwith object plastic struments. ' THE BOY is back in school but he probably wont be playing with his Battlestar Galactica game any more.
