Other Victorian ornaments were also removed at that time. Build- ing, located at the intersection of Main Street and West Gentile Street in Layton, was placed on the National Register of Historic places this past month. This honor is given only to those structures that have been important landmarks in the development of the nation, state or THE ARCHITECT for this building was William Allen, the only architect practicing in Davis County at that time. city. FOR 75 years, the Farmers Union served as a store, meeting place, commercial center, social center and political rallying place for the people of Layton. The firm ceased operating in 1957. The Farmers Union was built in three sections, the first being erected in 1890, the second shortly thereafter and the final section in 1930. The original building had a pent comer which faced the center of the intersection. It featured decorative stone, brick and Mr. Allen designed other Davis County landmarks including the courthouse,n Barnes Bank, the West Lay-toWard House, the Presbyterian Church and Governor Henry Bloods home and the Kaysville Tabernacle. Thomas Sandall, a night watchman for the Farmers Union, was killed by robbers. Many met and courted their marriage partners at Sunday School dances, Christmas Poinsettia dances, and Character Balls that were held in this hall. Often, when a man left to serve an ' LDS mission, a farewell dance was given in his honor under the auspices of the Layton Mutual Improvement Association in the Farmers Union Hall.
