Show Christmas Season Will Bo Ushered In Saturday By Special Radio Program In keeping with its promise to light Cedar City up like a "Christmas "Christ-mas Tree" this Yuletlde season, the Cedar City Junior Chamber of Commerce Com-merce Christmas Lighting Committee Commit-tee will officially turn on the special spe-cial Christmas lights on Main street on Saturday at a special radio program, pro-gram, it was announced this wee by W. S. "Dub" Leigh, chairman of the Jayoee Committee in chorgi. To culminate the efforts of the scores of Junior Chamber of Commerce Com-merce members who have worked on this project for the past fjur weeks In gathering trees and materials mater-ials for the lighting project and Installing them for use, this program pro-gram will mark the official opening open-ing of the Christmas season for Cedar Ce-dar City. Cedur City merchants will observe the occasion by remaining open for a two hour special shopping shop-ping period on Saturday evening. The special program, which will be broadcast over the facilities of radio station KSUB, will originote from the showroom of the Thorley Motor Company. It will be under . the direction of Don Nelson, with Arthur Hlgbee acting as Master of Ceremonies. The program will be-iln be-iln promptly at 8:30 p. m. and will last until 6:55. It will feature musical mus-ical rlumbers by Corry Olson and his orchestra, numbers by a mixed chorus under the direction of Carl Thornwall, a solo by Allan Harter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Al Harter, a short presentation talk by Mr. Leigh Tollowcd by an acceptance talk oy Mayor Myron P. Hlgbee and at 6:50 p. m. Mrs. Mary MacDonnld, president of the Csdar City Jaycee-Ette Jaycee-Ette Club will turn the Main street lights on by remote control from the showroom. The five minutes following will be devoted to special Christmas carols as sang by the mixed chorus. As soon as the main street lights are turned on, they will be greetrd by peals of chimes emlnotlng from the Cedar and Parks theares, with the chimes continuing for the two hour special shopping period. Lighted Light-ed too, will be the huge Community Christmas Tree, located on the Union Un-ion Pacific Railroad lawn Just north of the Escalante hotel. Another speciajpevent of the Junior Jun-ior Chamber of Commerce Activity progam for the Yuletide season will be the arrival here of Santa Claua from the North Pole via alrplace on December 24th, Just In time to officiate of-ficiate at the huge Elks club Children's Child-ren's Theater party to be held that same afternoon In the Cedar and Parks theatres. Official word was received yesterday yester-day by Ned Sagent and Wes Mul-lett, Mul-lett, who are In charge of Santa"s visit to Cedar City, that old St. Nick has accepted the Junior Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce and Elks Club Invitation to come to Cedar City a little early this year to make t special visit with all good boys and girls. Royce K. Knight, manager of the Parkair Plying Service has made arrangements to fly Santa to Cedar City on this date and will bring him down Main street in the plane to the official greeting stand Ahlch will be erected near the Community Com-munity Christmas Tree on the Union Un-ion Pacific Railroad lawn. Here Santa will be greeted by Roscoe Orovcr of Radio Station KSUB on behalf of the hundreds of children expected to be present. Following this greeting program Santa will then go to the Elks Club Theater party, where he will pass out hundreds hund-reds of bags of candy to those present. pres-ent. Due to the huge amount of work to be done this year in distributing toys in Cedar City, Santa has notified not-ified the Junior Chamber and local Elks Club that he Is bringing along helper on the snme day. The helper help-er will arrive in Cedar City by special spe-cial jeep. The Santa-.'cep will tour 'own Main street directly after the Santa-plane. A guard of honor, Including three siren cars of the Cedar City Police DcpartnicTit. headed by Chief of Politic Arthur Nelson, and a group of Elk Club and Jaycee members will escort Santa's plane down the street to make sure that children will not get in the way of the plane. All addition traffic on Main strce', (Crntlnurd to Front Pie of Sec ond Section) Christmas (Continued from Front Pace) with the exception of the automobiles automo-biles already parked there, will be diverted for the 20 minute pelod that it will require the plane to travel tra-vel from Center Street to First north street to the greeting stand. All children are expected to be on hand at the greeting stand area to welcome Santa upon his arrival, instead in-stead of on Main street at tills time. In addition to the Main street lighting program,, the Junior Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce is sponsoring a lighting contest for all residential and business firms, with first, second sec-ond and third prizes being awarded in both divisionss L. D. Watson is In charge of this activity. It is understood un-derstood ihat this year the Jaycee group is studying the suitability of presenting loving cups for prizes rather than cash, feeling that such a prize could be kept years after year and become something to treasurer, holding more sentimental sentimen-tal value than a cash prize. Rendering invaluable assistance ' in the Christmas lighting program 1 this year have been the Southern Utah Power Company, which has cooperated by furnishing skilled electricians to supervise the work; Cedar City Corporation, which has assumed the responsibility of paying for the electricity used, and the ! j Chamber of Commerce, which has donated the lighting necessary for the Community Christmas Tree. |
