Show Death Claims Former Sheriff Of Iron County i 1 , f f t ARTHUR NEIGON Arthur Nelson, 72, native of Cedar City and outstanding peace officer of Cedar City and Iron County for many years, died Monday, Mar. 14, following sur-eery, sur-eery, lie had been in poor health lor the past two months, and submitted to surgery on Mar. 4 and again on Mar. 13. Mr. Nelson was born In Cedar City on Oct 2, 1887. a son of Peter Albert and Agnes Maine Nelson, early pioneer of the area. He had spent practically his entire en-tire life here, except for three years spent in Idaho and a few years in California. Mr. Nelson's father died while they were In Idaho and the family fam-ily returned to Cedar City. Later Arthur returned to Idaho alone to bring his father's body to Cedar Ce-dar City for burial. On Oct. 11, 1910, he married Mary Eva Houchen In Cedar City, and the marriage was later solemnized sol-emnized In the St. George Temple. Tem-ple. He Is survived by his widow, three sons, William Albert, Lu-Dean, Lu-Dean, and Arthur T. (Ted) Nel son, all of Cedar City; 11 grandchildren grand-children and three great-grandchildren. A fourth son, Douglas, died just four weeks ago. I Aiso survivng are live oroth-ers, oroth-ers, Albert U., George T., Louis 'A., J. Darwin, and Millard Nelson, Nel-son, all of Cedar City, and one sister, Mrs. Charles H. (Grace) I Renneati. San Bernardino, Calif. Mr. Nelson, a veteran Cedar City peace officer, served as city marshal!, deputy siierlff and sheriff of Iron County. He began his career In law enforcement In 1914 as city marshal of Cedar City, and retired on Jan. 1, 1959, after a wide and varied career) that brought him recognition throughout Utah and the West. Throughout the years he has, been instrumental in the solution of a number of tremendously important im-portant criminal cases. During his career he served under eight sheriffs as deputy,' and then became sheriff, a position posi-tion he held for ten years before retiring. He was active In civic and political affairs and was widely known as a friend of man ' and child alike. j Funeral services will be held In the Cedar Third Ward chapel, this afternoon, Thursday, and burial will be In the Cedar City cemetery. |
