Show Key games ahead Thunderbird spikers in action this week join the NAIA this season, the District Seven playoff plans are currently up in the air. . CEDAR CITY - The southern Utah State College women's volleyball team can almost make or break its chances for a sixth consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Western Division championship this week in Colorado. The Thunderbirds challenge a part of teams still in the running for a spot in the NAIA District Seven playoffs Friday at Grand Junction, Colo., and Saturday at Gunnison, Gun-nison, Colo. First up will be Mesa College Friday at Grand Junction. Then the 'Birds will tangle with Univeristy of Southern Colorado in a second Friday match. The Southern Colorado contest is a non-league match. "These are both key games for us," SUSC Coach Joy Peterson exlained. "There's still some last minute scramming going on for both the division championship and a shot at the conference title and for berths in the District Seven playoffs." After the Colorado showsdown, SUSC has only one . conference match remaining, an Oct. 29 contest with Fort Lewis College. "Both Mesa and Western State are young and scrappy teams. They keep coming at you. We did poorly against Western State and lost in Cedar City, but turned things around against Mesa," Peterson exlained. SUSC will be seeking to avenge the WCS loss and maintain its domination of Mesa. A spiii would guarantee the lady 'Birds a chance to play for the RMAC division championship Oct. 29 when Fort Lewis comes to Cedar City. The winner of the Eastern Division will host the Western Division winner for the cham pionship of the RMAC. Colorado Mines currently leads the Eastern Division. SUSC's 4 1 record is a half jump ahead of Fort Lewis (5 2) in the Western Division. Because of the NAIA District Seven's "best laid plans" for the Eastern Division champ to host the district playoffs, and because Colorado Mines-the probable Eastern Division decision to not |
