Show Religious Intelligence Two Hungarian Jesuits. Revs. Stephen Pon-gracz, Pon-gracz, S. J., and Melchior Gro-leczky, S. J., have just been declared beatified by Pope Pius X. They v.ere martyred during the religious persecution at Kashun in 1019. The process of their beatification was begun under Pope Urban VIII in 1628. After a time it ceased for some reason, and was finally resumed in 1S09 by Cardinal Vaszary. In June of this year the decree was issued, but the death of Leo XIII delayed its formal, proclamation until now. Among the plans which Bishop McQuaid of Rochester has in view is one to erect an ideal home for the Catholic aged men and women of that city. There has been up to the present time only a home for aged women, and even this has been inadequate. inade-quate. . t Some time ago the bishop purchased nine and one-half acres of land on which to erect a new home, which would fulfill all icquircments for a long time o come. The plans are now ready and the structure will consist of three buildings entirely separated from one another. An English society under the patronage of St. Ahselm performs the useful task of reading, all non-Catholic books as they apiar, for the purpose of issuing monthly lists of such as may be safely read by Catholics. It will interest students of the Irish language to learn that Dickens' "Christmas Carol" has been translated into Gaelic by Father Dineen of Dublin. The translation is said to preserve as far as possible pos-sible the characteristic -flavor cf the inimitable work. |
