Funeral services for President Pedro Montt. of Chili, who died suddenly at Bremen on August 16. after his arrival from New York, were held in Berlin on Thursday, August 25. This date was selected se-lected as the earliest at which Emperor Empe-ror William, who attended as a mark of respect to Chili and the late president, presi-dent, could be present. Pending the interment, the body of President Montt will be placed in a vault in the Church of SI. Hedwig. one of the historic churches in Berlin, erected by Frederick the Great in the eighteenth century. President Montt was a devout Catholic Cath-olic and was- accompanied on his travels by his chaplain. He was conversing con-versing with Mayor Gaynor. of Xc-w York, a few minutes before the recent attack on the mayor, and it is thought that the shock of the assault hastened the Chilean statesman's death. Manuel Montt. the late president's father, was president of the Republic of Chile from 1851 to 1861, and was a most successful administrator. His son was, so to speak, born into public life, and had been full forty-two years in various offices himself. In 1S6S, soon after his admission to the bar, lie was elected to the lower house of the national legislature. Eventually he became senator for one of the southern south-ern provinces, member of the cabinet, speaker of the chamber of deputies, minister plenipotentiary at Washington. Washing-ton. D. C, and finallv president of Chile. During the frontier dispute between Chile and the Argentine Republic, he was a most prominent factor in bringing bring-ing it to a happy solution.
