Show Death Mgr. Jessing. Mgh. Jessing, soldier, priest and philanthropist and founder of the famous seminary, Josephinum, died in Columbus, O., last week. . Mgr. Jessing's . life has "been one of much interest and labor. He was born in Munster, Germany, on Nov. 17, 183G, and received his primary education there. After having served in the army for five years and participated in the war of 1364-66 he came to this country in 1S67 and continued his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained or-dained July 18, 1870. and was then ap pointed rector of Sacred Heart Church, Pomeroy, O. On May 1, 1S73, he published pub-lished the first issue of a German Catholic paper, known, as the W'aisen-freund, W'aisen-freund, with the intention of building and maintaining an orphan asylum with the profits accruing from its publication. He afterwards founded a free seminary. The Josophinum, which is in a flourishing condition. The death of Hsr- Jessing deprives the Church in America of one of its foremost and most zealous . workers. His disinterested and untiring energy ; and labors are " a monument ' more ; lasting than even the noble institution ; he founded. His deds will live after him, ever meritirg for him an esteem and v,ereraticn of sincere worth in the hearts of his fellow men. |
