The bill is designed to preserve thew im- ! portant antiquities from vandalism. i They are placed by the bill in the custody of the bureau of American ethnology. eth-nology. Land Commissioner Hermann has made a favorable report to congress on the sale and use of timber of public : lands. He says: "Prompt action on j the part of ccngiess to preserve what is (left of the timber and to better regu-i regu-i late its use. is imperatively demanded. : Every year's delay inflicts upon the i material interests of the country in-' in-' juries which, with the lapsa of time,. increase in magnitude and become more ! difficult to remedy. It is obvious that i the people of the public land states and of the territories must have timber or j its products for domestic purposes and I for use in local industries, and if the j government has timber that may be ! disposed of without injury, to the more I general interests, the people should be I allowed to use it on making reasonable compensation for it. and In meritorious j cases they should be permitted to use i it free of charge in limited quantity. They should be treated with that lib-i lib-i erality and justice which will surely j promote their welfare and happiness as a self-respecting people and add im-; im-; measurably to the prosperity and sta-i sta-i bility of the nation." |
