Jensen, 309th Maintenance Wing Public Affairs CPI symposium chairman. "The A-10 The 571st Aircraft Maintenance Squad- group not only improved their system by achieving more of its goal, but did so ron (A-10) was honored for its work on using an integrative approach. We feel the Precision Engagement upgrade as this approach is a necessary condition to part of the Continuous Process Improvement Symposium, May 9-10 at the Davis achieving quick and dramatic results, and a theme of the CPI Symposium." Objectives included reducing hours, lowering overtime costs, improving quality, enhancing training and reducing work-inprogress to accommodate fewer hangar facilities. "The A-lOs lost six production docks to another workload and training was needed for nearly 100 new technicians hired over the'past year," said Greg Hoffman, 571 AMXS director. "Our squadron almost doubled in size with this modification. The 12-member Lean Team was formed to establish a standard work package that logically flows every step of this new program from wheels down to wheels up." The Lean team used Critical Chain Project Management, also known as buffer management, to create a daily "hot list" of operations that need to be accomplished. The team further enhanced the process by breaking the technicians into cells to improve training, quality and cost. "The cells we established were to focus on a couple issues," Mr. Hoffman said. "One was to keep our process moving. More importantly, it was to ensure our ^ training curve was accelerated." The first aircraft entered the CCPM process on Dec. 14, 2006, and was completed in March. Installation time, which had exceeded 5,400 hours, was reduced to 3,811 hours, and continued to decline as the work progressed. A milestone was reached March 1 when aircraft 79-0082 finished its precision engagement modification 14 days ahead of schedule.
