Show "CALL FOR UTAH STATE CAUCUS CF THE AMERICAN LEGION Meeting of Members of National Soldiers' Sol-diers' Organization to be Held in Salt Lake on June 4 and 5. On March 15 of llii.s year, a caucus of nearly 1000 ollieers and men who represented all tin; cumliat divisions and all sections of I lie S. O. S.. was convened in Paris under the direction of the temporary committee of th'e American Legion which hud been formed in Franco. On May S, 0, and 10 n caucus of more than IfiOO ol'licer.s and men, representing rep-resenting each stale in the United Slates, was convened in St. Louis, and there performed the same functions as t lie Paris caucus for the men who were retained in, and had returned to America. As a result of this caucus in St. Louis a plan of organization was adopted which provides for the establishment estab-lishment of state organizations, and retains in oftice the temporary state officers and executive committee. By virtue of the authority thus invested this call is issued. All persons who were In the military mili-tary or naval service of the United States during the period between April 6, 1917, and November 11, 191S, both dates inclusive, and all persons who served in the military or naval service of any of the governments associated as-sociated with the United States during dur-ing the world war, provided that they were cit'-"ns at the time of their enlistment, en-listment, except those persons separated sepa-rated from the service under terms amounting to dishonorable discharge, and except also those persons who re-" fused to perform their military duties on the ground of conscientious or political po-litical objection, are urged to attend the state caucus to be held in Salt Lake City, June 4 and 5, in the Tabernacle, Tab-ernacle, beginning at 2:30 on the afternoon af-ternoon of the 4th. It is suggested by the executive committee, in order to provide for representation for every county in the state, that voting be by counties and that each county shall have three votes for every one hundred men who entered the service from that county. Every man eligible for membership mem-bership in the American Legion shall have a voice in the caucus. The duties of the caucus will be to hear the action taken by the St. Louis caucus and determine our course thereunder; there-under; to appoint temporary state officers of-ficers and an executive committee, to act until the state .convention of the American Legion, which will be held in October, and which said committee shall have authority to incorporate the American Legion in the state of Utah and issue charters to posts having hav-ing fifteen or more applicants ; to provide pro-vide for a convention to be held in October, Oc-tober, whereby all officers and enlisted men eligible to membership in the Legion Le-gion will participate in the election of representatives to a National Convention Conven-tion to be convened on November 11 at Minneapolis; to hear and determine matters presented by the Utah Soldier Settlement commission ; to pass upon other important questions effecting Americanism ; and to perform such other duties as may properly come before be-fore it. j By order of the Executive Committee Commit-tee for. Utah. The constitution of the American Legion was adopted at the caucus held at St. Louis. The preamble declares that: For God and country we associate asso-ciate ourselves together for the follow-ng follow-ng purposes : To uphold and defend the constitution constitu-tion of the United States of America ; to maintain law and order ; to foster and perpetuate a one hundred per cent Americanism ; to preserve the memories memo-ries and incidents of our association in the great war ; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the com- munity, state and nation ; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses ; to make right the master of might ; to promote peace and good will on earth : to safeguard and transmit trans-mit to posterity the principles of justice, jus-tice, freedom and democracy ; to consecrate con-secrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness. While requiring that every member of the organization perform his full duty as a citizen according to his own conscience and understanding, the organization or-ganization shall be absolutely nonpartisan non-partisan and shall not. be used for the dissemination of partisan principles or for the promotion of the candidacy of any person seeking public office or preferment. The annual convention shall be composed com-posed of delegates and alternates from each state, the District of Columbia and each territory and territorial possession pos-session of the United States, each of which shall be entitled to four delegates dele-gates and four alternates and to one additional delegate and alternate for each one thousand memberships paid ip thirty days prior to the date of the national convention. |
