Show Taxpayers Declare For Bond Issue For Roads! County Commissioners Are Asked to Submit to the Taxpayers Taxpay-ers Proposition of Voting $280,000 for Road Paving Pav-ing and Improvement Gunnison and South End Gets Recognition. "Bond the county to the limit for road purposes," was the unanimous expression of the 300 or more representative repre-sentative "boosters" from all parts of the county at . the mass meeting which was held at the court house at Manti last Wednesday. Never in the history of the county has there been held a meeting where more enthusiasm enthusi-asm was manifest and the final outcome out-come was that the county commissioners commis-sioners of Sanpete county be asked to submit the proposition of voting $280,000 bonds for the purpose of completing the Pigeon Hole project and otherwise building good roads tniougnout the county. Not atone was the bonding proposition propo-sition unanimously endorsed but Gunnison, tnrouga its representation 6t "boosters," headed by Mayor J. W. Jones of Gunnison and A. C. Hickenlooper Hick-enlooper of Centerfield and hearty aupporters from Axtell and Fayette, was "put in the swim" and came out nrith irlr.ro flvimT and a PTlOrilV S11TT1 this state and outside, and urged the members of the convention to thoroughly thor-oughly understand the importance of immediate action in supporting the bonding proposition. When it was unanimously voiced that it be the sense of the meeting to endorse the bond issue the matter of adjusting the distribution of the surplus sur-plus of the $280,000, after the $140.-000 $140.-000 was expended on the Pigeon Hollow Hol-low road, was settled by the several districts appointing one delegate from its representation. This committee com-mittee was composed as follows: Fountain Green, A. H. Anderson; Moroni, Mo-roni, J. Fox; Wales, H. R. Thomas"; Fairview, J. L. Bench; Mt. Pleasant, Thomas Braby; Spring City, J. M. Johnson; Ephraim, F. H. Rasmus-sen; Rasmus-sen; Manti, L. R. Anderson; May-field, May-field, Clyde Whitlock; Gunnison, J. W. Jones; Fayette, C. H. Pickett; Centerfield, C. A. Hickenlooper; Axtell, Ax-tell, Wm. Douglas; Indianola, A. Madsen. An adjournment was taken at 11:45 and the committee went into mission to the county commissione rs. The recommendation was first submitted sub-mitted to the members of the contention conten-tion and was unanimously adopted : "TO THE HONORABLE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS: "Representatives from practically all cities and towns in Sanpete eoui ty, in convention assembled at the County Court House on March 10th, 15)20, unanimously adopted the following fol-lowing witth respect to a road program pro-gram for Sanpete county: "Recommend that we bond the County to the limit for Road purposes. pur-poses. "That the bonds be put in the Bond Election as follows: $70,000 to be expended for hard surfaced road from Fairview to Spring City; $35,000 from Manti South limits to Sevier county line; $35,000 from Pige'on Hollow to Juab county line; $140,000 from Manti South limits to Pigeon Hollow, and if there is any excess from construction of Manti-Ephraim Manti-Ephraim project to divide fifty tifty between the Pigeon Hollow Juab apportion for road improvements in the south section of the county. The sum of $35,000 will be the southern part of the county's portion in the distribution of the bonds voted, and . while it may seem small the fact that recognition was received gives evidence evi-dence of the determination of the cilizens'here that outsiders will know we are on the "map." When Judge A. H. Christensen, acting as chairman of the convention, conven-tion, called the meeting to order the following districts answered roll call with the following number of delegates dele-gates present: Fountain Green, 4; Moroni, 5; Fairview, 8; Mt. Pleasant, 20; Gunnison, 20; Spring City, 10; Ephraim, 12; Manti, 6; Mayfield, 5; Centerfield, 9; Axtell, 1. Immediately Immedi-ately Judge Christensen made plain the object of the meeting by outlining outlin-ing the plan of voting bonds by the citizens of Sanpete county for the completion of the Pigeon Hollow project pro-ject and other proposed road improvement im-provement in the county. Chairman Christensen went into detail in his remarks and Impressed the importance import-ance of the county "getting in line" with other progressive sections in executive session ana it was 4 tnree o'clock before the deliberations were brought to a successful close. In the committee meeting, it came out, the northeast part of the county was not very desirous of considering the south end of- the county and it was at this session that Mayor Jones of Gunnison, ably assisted by Messrs. Hickenlooper of Centerfield. Wm. Douglas of Axtell, and O H. Pickett of Fayette, made a firm stand for recognition and came out victorious. At no time was the feeling strained in the committee meeting, but with facts and statistics Mayor Jones convinced con-vinced his fellow members thRt Gunnison Gun-nison heretofore had suffered by not being recognized and impressed factors fac-tors in the county's affairs. The final fin-al action of the committee was the apportionment of the $140,000 as follows: Mt. Pleasanl, comprising the northeast section, $70,000, from the south city limits of Manti to ;he north Sevier county line, designated as the south section, $35,000; from Pigeon Hollow to the Juab' county line, designated as the north section, $35,000. When the committee had completed ils work the following recommendation rec-ommendation was drafted for sub- district and Manti-Sevier district. "That we leave tfie time of expenditure ex-penditure to the County Commissioners Commission-ers .nd the money be spent only where designated." Enthusiasm was installed into the large assemblage by the announcement announce-ment that a movement was being started to change the route of the Arrowhead trail from its present course and instead of routing it as it is, change it to run down through Sanpete and Sevier counties and connect con-nect at a south point. AVhile nothing of an official nature has been done as yet, it was strongly intimated that, should this county, in conjunction with Sevier county, support the government gov-ernment and state by voting bonds to match what funds may do had for the purpose, there was a strong likelihood like-lihood that the change would be made. Just as soon as the county commissioners com-missioners can nrepare for the bond election the matter will be pur. before the people of the county and it will be the purpose of the "boosters" back of the movement to immediately get in touch with the tax payers and put before them the vital importance of 1 supporting the bonds. |
