Show Of Interest to Black Hawk Veterans Headquarters National Guard of JJuh, Adjutant General's Office. Salt Lake City, Utah, April 4, 1917. To Black Hawk Indian War Veterans: Ve-terans: Referring to the recent Act of Congress Con-gress granting pensions to the Black Hawk Indian War veterans, I beg to advise that this Is a matter handled exclusively by the Pension bureau at Washington, D. C, to whom applica tlon should be made for the necessary blanks. For your information beg to advise that the law provides in part as follows: fol-lows: "Provided, That when there is no record of service or payment for same in the War department or Treasury Trea-sury department, the applicant may establish the service by satisfactory evidence frm the muster rolls on file in the several state or territorial sruhives," The only records of service of Black Hawk Indian war in this office are the affidavits filed by the veterans about 1915 under the state law creating creat-ing a commission for taking same. If you participated in the distribution iof the 850,000 appropriated la 1915 your name appears on the affidavits. There are no muster rolls" for this service oh file in this office and whether whe-ther or not the Pension bureau will accept the affidavits is not known. Senator Smoot advises us this law Is so radically different from any other pension law that it has been found necessary to print new blanks for applications and that these new blanks are not yet ready for distribution. distribu-tion. In all probability the newspapers newspa-pers will publish Information as to when they are ready. With reference to the appropriation made by the last state legislature of $25,000 for the relief of Black Hawk Indian War veterans, this fund, in accordance with said law, is to be handled by the state board of examiners, exami-ners, and I am informed that this board has not yet decided upon what procedure it will follow in the. distribution distri-bution thereof.
