Show STEAM COLLIER OF 'CEMENT. Italian Ship Will Have Sides as Smooth as Marble and Able to Defy Shellfish and Seaweed. Rome. The Italian engineer Gab-ellini Gab-ellini is now engaged in constructing for the Italian government a steam collier entirely built of stone. Gabellini made experiments exlend-ing exlend-ing over several years with small stone skiffs, and found them buoyant and strong, and easy to navigate. He is now building a steamship on an iron keel, forming a double framework frame-work first, into which cement is poured, thus forming the hull, which is extremely light and absolutely watertight. This hull, too, is smooth, and can be polished like marble, and no shellfish shell-fish or seaweed can become attached to it. The upper deck and bridge are also of concrete, and the ship will have water-tight compartments of cement. |
