Show THE CHANGING UTAH ECONOMY government was the largest single source of personal income in utah last year according to a report just released by utah foundation the private non nonprofit profit tax research organization government income disbursements federal state and local in the form of wages salaries and benefits totaled or nearly 25 of all utah personal income during 1954 the report continues this per was nearly 50 higher than the average for the nation only two other states virginia and new alex ico derived a larger proportion of their personal income from govern ment sources in 1954 the study mentions that utah s per capita income total personal income divided by state population declined about 20 last year from 1 in 1953 to 1 1483 in 1954 HOW ever this slight decline in per capita income was offset by reduced fed eral oral income taxes which went into effect last year thus the average dis income remained about the same both years utah s per capita income was be low the average for the nation the western states and the mountain states the utah foundation report said during 1954 utah ranked among the 48 states pi in per capita income which was nearly W be e low the average for the nation foundation analysts point out that only two of the eight mountain states and the eleven western states had lower per capita incomes than utah last year utah s average income was below the average of the eight mountain states and between and less than the averages of any of the pacific coast states |
